Day 10 - Guillermo Canas Interview
Day 10 - Guillermo Canas Interview
Wednesday, June 1, 2005
Q. If you could go back and change one tactic that you used in this match
that might bring a different result, what would it be, or was this match
just fated to be a loss today?
GUILLERMO CANAS: I think if I need to go back and change something, I change
my... I change Puerta (laughing) - can I do it - I think is what I need to
change in the moment.
Q. Even though two guys from Argentina had to lose today, it was still a
great day for Argentina in tennis. Why do you think there's such an interest
from the young people today in playing tennis rather than another sport?
GUILLERMO CANAS: In Argentina?
Q. Uh-hmm.
GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, interesting, I think it's great for my country still
having one player in semifinal of this kind of tournament. I think is great
for the young people watching one Argentinian player playing in finals of
tournament. I think this one is a lot of motivation for the young guys start
to play tennis.
Q. Why do you think you're so much more successful, not only on clay, but
we're also seeing it on other surfaces, as well?
GUILLERMO CANAS: I think in the clay court we are very successful because we
born in clay. But we improve a lot in the others court. I think we have very
good results in other court. I think for this year in the first Grand Slam of
the year we have three players play in the second week. I think at this one
is very good. I think improve a lot. We have very good results in hard court,
too.
I think this one is the new generation for the tennis, Argentinian tennis,
that play in all kind of courts. They try to play better in this, and they
try to (go/goal?) for playing. I think this one is the key to improve every
day.
Q. While there are many Argentines that are indeed very good on other
surfaces, clearly Mariano Puerta is not one of them. That brings another
question, how much of an advantage or edge does he get by playing on clay
week after week, almost never playing on another surface?
GUILLERMO CANAS: I think that's the decision he take. I think Mariano is
very good talent. I think if maybe he change a little bit of the mind to
try to improve or to try to go to other kind of court, they gonna start
playing better and better. I think is very good player for playing in all
kind of court.
But I think they need to change a little bit the mind to try to improve.
Q. Really, what I meant was, by playing - and he's played I think 10
tournaments this year, all on clay - does that give him an edge coming
into the French Open because he's played so much clay this year?
GUILLERMO CANAS: Yeah, I think maybe is advantage because he play a lot in
clay court. He play very well the previous season; he play very well the
tournaments before Roland Garros. They give you a lot of confidence in this
court and this for coming here to Roland Garros.
But I think today was very close match. Today he played in the important
moments better than me. And for this, he is in semifinal and I lose today.
Q. What do you think the difference was between you, if any difference at
all, on court today?
GUILLERMO CANAS: I think there was a small difference, I think. He play very
solid important point. He go to take the -- he go to take the points, and
maybe he have the luck today to play well this important points, this
important moment.
I didn't do it very well. For this, it was a small, small chance for him to
win, to beat me today.
If I take one thing, I think he play a little better than me.
Q. Do you remember the first time you have a match against Puert, and what
do you think, what do you remember about the time you was Juniors, you was
very young? What sort of relationship you have with him?
GUILLERMO CANAS: I think the first time I play against Mariano was more than
20 years ago. Is tough to remember. But we know each other very well because
we were close each other; we play the tournaments in Argentina, the junior
tournaments.
But I don't remember the first time I play against him. We play in the same
club, club matches in Argentina when I was -- when we was young. For this, we
know each other very well.
But I really not remember when we play the first time.
Q. At the end of this match you're facing two matchpoints, and you fought
both of them off. You took both of them; they weren't handed to you. You
had to make big shots on both of them to get back to deuce. Did you feel
as though that was a momentum switch, that now you could break him and get
back into this match?
GUILLERMO CANAS: I think I tried to do my best in all the point. I think I'm
play very well the two matchpoint he have. And then, yes, in the years I
think in my mind I have a lot of chance. But he play very solid. He play
very good the other two point. This one was the difference. I think in the
moment he need to play well, he do it. For this, he's now in the semifinals.
THE MODERATOR: Spanish questions, please.
Q. After three and a half hours, how do you feel? How did you feel when you
lost the match?
GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, I was disappointed. I think disappointed is the right
word. My expectation was to be in the semifinals, and it was a very tough
battle between the two of us. I think I did everything I could do to be in
semifinals.
When the match ended, well, I think I felt disappointment, some small
disappointment. But, you know, it's a tennis match and somebody has to lose.
Q. You looked a little tired at the end of the match?
GUILLERMO CANAS: No, I was a little tired in the fourth set. At the end of
the fourth set I was a little tired. But I was fine in the fifth set. I don't
think I was feeling tired.
Obviously, you know, you feel a little tired. It was a very intense match.
Obviously, towards the end you might not feel as much as in the beginning,
but I wasn't feeling tired at the end of the last set, no.
Q. Which defeat hurts more: Today's or the one of three years ago?
GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, both. Today, I played until the last point. I gave my
best until the last point. In the previous occasion, it was three sets. In
the last set, I didn't play my best tennis on that occasion. Today, I played
as best as possible until the end of the match.
So I can feel proud because I played until the very end. But he won, and I
lost.
Q. When you won the second and third sets, you were playing a little
differently?
GUILLERMO CANAS: Yes, well, I was being a little aggressive. The first set,
he played very well. Then I tried to get more into the match and to attack a
little bit more, especially in the third set.
But he was moving a little less. And when the fourth set began, the match
changed and became a lot more intense. I couldn't take the initiative. He
always had the initiative, and that might have been the difference, you know,
what made it possible for him to win.
Really, he played very good tennis today.
Q. After this tournament you will have the best ranking in your career. What
are your objectives for the rest of the year? Are you going to play the
Masters? What are you going to do?
GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, my aim will be to, yes, play the Masters. That was my
aim at the beginning of the year, in fact.
But I think that I fulfilled one of my aims, which is to be among the Top 10.
That was my objective at the beginning of the year - well, in fact, longer
than that.
I don't think my aim is in terms of the ranking; I think my aim will be to
have a place in the Masters before the end of the year and to try to have
good results.
Q. I don't know if I'm wrong, but Monday, you will be No. 1 in Argentina.
GUILLERMO CANAS: Maybe.
Q. Are you pleased?
GUILLERMO CANAS: Well, I think it's a bit difficult to feel satisfaction.
Last year, I was 11th in the world. So, you know, 1 or 4 for Argentina. I
think really you're going to be happy if you're 7th, 8th, 9th in the World,
but it's not because of you are No. 3 or 4 in Argentina, you know.
So I think that they're going to continue, and Argentina is going to have
lots of Top 10s, I think.
