Kuerten returns to Brazil's Davis Cup team
RIO DE JANEIRO, July 1 (Reuters) - Former world number one Gustavo Kuerten
was recalled to Brazil's Davis Cup team on Friday after an absence of nearly
two years caused by political in-fighting and injury.
Kuerten was named in the team for the American zone Group Two tie at home
to the Netherlands Antilles in Joinville on July 15-17 in what is effectively
the competition's third division.
Kuerten's last appearance was against Canada in September 2003, when Brazil
were beaten and lost their place in the World Group.
"I'm very happy to be playing in the Davis Cup again and I'm looking
forward to representing Brazil, which has always been one of the big
motivations in my career," said Kuerten in a statement.
"We're going to try and resurrect our tennis and getting back to the
second division will be the first step."
Brazil slipped into Group Two last year after losing ties to Paraguay,
Venezuela and Peru.
The defeats came as Kuerten led a boycott by the top players in protest at the
administration of Nelson Nastas, who at the time was president of the Brazilian
Tennis Confederation (CBT).
Kuerten also underwent hip surgery last year, returning to the circuit in April
.
