Massu advances, Horna upset in first round at Amersfoort

AMERSFOORT, The Netherlands (Ticker) - Nicolas Massu of
Chile and Luis Horna of Peru will not have a rematch of
their previous tournament.
The third-seeded Massu advanced to the second round of the
$390,000 Priority Telecom Open claycourt tournament with a
victory Tuesday, while the fifth-seeded Horna was dealt a
premature exit.
Massu posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over French qualifier
Nicolas Thomann to improve to just 10-9 this season.
Earlier this month, he recorded a straight-sets win over
Horna in the quarterfinals at Gstaad. That was just his
second semifinal appearance since winning Olympic gold in
Athens last summer.
Horna was upset by Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands, 6-7
(7-9), 6-3, 7-5, to fall to 9-14 this season. Nine of those
losses have come in his first tournament match.
The 24-year-old Horna became the third seed upset in the
first round, joining No. 7 Oscar Hernandez of Spain and No.
8 Tomas Behrend of Germany.
in Tuesday's only other match featuring a seeded player,
No. 6 Victor Hanescu of Romania got past wild card Steven
Korteling, 6-4, 7-5.
In a battle of two Dutch wild cards, Melle Van Gemerden
advanced to the second round when Dennis Van Scheppingen
retired with a wrist injury trailing, 6-0.
In other first-round action Tuesday, Argentine Agustin
Calleri defeated French qualifier Julien Benneteau, 6-4,
2-6, 6-3, and Italian Daniele Bracciali ousted Radim Zitko
of the Czech Republic, 7-6 (7-2). Bracciali lost to
American Andy Roddick in the second round of Wimbledon last
month.
Other first-round winners Tuesday were Alex Calatrava of
Spain, Czech Ivo Minar and Costa Rican Juan Antonio Marin,
who next will face either top-seeded Mariano Puerta of
Spain or Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia & Montenegro.
Puerta lost to teenage sensation Rafael Nadal of Spain in
the French Open final two months ago but has played only
one match since, losing in straight sets in the first round
of Wimbledon
