July 25, 2005
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports
UMAG, Croatia -- Second-seeded Guillermo Coria beat
Croatian qualifier Zeljko Krajan 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 Monday in
the opening round of the Croatia Open, the Argentine's
first match since Wimbledon.
Coria is the tournament favorite following the withdrawal
of French Open champion Rafael Nadal.
Fifth-seed Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic cruised past
Albert Montanes of Spain 6-3, 6-3, and will face another
Spaniard, Albert Portas, who defeated Novak's countryman
Jiri Vanek 6-1, 6-0.
Another Czech, Lukas Dlouhy, defeated ninth-seeded Spaniard
Alberto Martin 7-5, 6-3. Dlouhy's second-round opponent
will be qualifier Ilia Bozoljac of Serbia-Montenegro, who
ousted Francesco Aldi of Italy 6-3, 6-3.
Eighth-seeded Filippo Volandri of Italy beat Croatian wild
card Sasa Tuksar 6-2, 6-1, and Belgium's Kristof Vliegen
overcame French Open junior champion Marin Cilic, another
local wild card, 7-5, 6-2.
Nadal pulled out citing knee tendinitis. The 19-year-old
said it was not serious but could be aggravated if not
rested.
"I have had problems with my knee for a few tournaments and
it is hurting more now, so I have to cancel to not finish
on the operating table," he said.
The Spaniard, who won his eighth title of 2005 on Sunday at
the Mercedes Cup, appeared on center court to apologize to
spectators.
"I played here two years ago and really love this
tournament," Nadal said. "I keep planning to come back but
something happens."
