UMAG, Croatia -- Guillermo Coria overcame a loss in the first set and
beat Filippo Volandri 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 Saturday to advance to the final of
the Croatia Open.
Coria will face four-time champion Carlos Moya, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over
Jiri Novak, in Sunday's title match.
Coria, also a finalist at the Masters in Monte Carlo and Rome, was
down a set down and a break point at 4-2 before he turned around the
semifinal match.
"That was the key point," Coria said through a translator. "There was
everything in this match, a lot of turnarounds, but I knew how to
capitalize on my chances."
The second-seeded Argentine, who is playing his first tournament since
Wimbledon, needed time to hone his serve on the clay, and was broken twice
in the opening set before ending Volandri's hope of a third straight
appearance in the Croatia final. Coria broke at 3-3 and 5-3 in the
second set.
Ahead 4-2 in the third, Coria staved off another break and sealed the match
with a second break two games later.
Moya, a former French Open champion, broke Novak in the opening game,
immediately dropped his service, and broke again at 4-4 for the first set.
Novak was down 5-4 in the second and had a break point chance to force
a third set, but Moya scrambled and held to win.
Coria had a 4-2 record against Moya and has won the last four matches.
They last met in the 2004 French Open quarterfinals.
Moya opened his season with his 18th career title in India in January.
