KITZBUEHEL, Austria -- Defending champion Nicolas Massu was eliminated
from the Generali Open on Saturday, losing to unseeded Fernando Verdasco
3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Verdasco will meet third-seeded Gaston Gaudio in the final after Gaudio
ousted Argentine compatriot Mariano Zabaleta 6-1, 6-1.
"I am very disappointed, because I wanted to repeat my success from last
year. However, I was not playing in the same form and Fernando played
excellent tennis today," Massu said.
Verdasco surprised himself with the result.
"It's amazing. I came to Kitzbuehel and wanted to win some matches. But I
never dreamed of making it to the final," the Spaniard said.
With temperatures on court reaching more than 122 degrees, seventh-seeded
Massu of Chile started better than his opponent and dominated the opening
set.
In the final set, Verdasco broke his opponent early, but ran into trouble
with Massu's powerful forehand and gave away his serve in game eight.
Going ahead 5-4 with his own serve, Massu looked set for victory but
smashed a forehand into the net, allowing Verdasco to pull level again.
Seemingly distracted from his unforced error, Massu lost concentration in
his following service game and conceded another break.
Verdasco wrapped up victory to reach his first final in 2005, and just the
third of his career.
"I cannot believe I am in the final. But now that I am, I want to win it,
of course," Verdasco said.
Later in the day, Gaudio cruised past Zabaleta in the other semifinal.
"I played perfect tennis today. I basically made no mistakes. If I can keep
this level also tomorrow, Verdasco will have a hard time beating me,"
Gaudio said.
