SOPOT, Poland -- Former champion Jose Acasuso snapped a five-match losing
streak, beating Jiri Vanek 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 Monday to advance to the second
round of the Idea Prokom Open.
Acasuso, the 2002 champ and last year's runner-up, won for the first time
since the French Open. He will face wild card Adam Chadaj, who won his tour
debut 6-3 5-7, 6-1 over Alessio Di Mauro.
Albert Costa, the 2002 French Open champion, avenged a straight-set loss
last week with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Seventh-seeded Igor Andreev of Russia had lost four straight since Wimbledon
before beating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2.
Andreev won his first career title in April in Spain, but it was the only
main tour event this season in which he reached at least the quarterfinals.
In other matches, eighth-seeded Victor Hanescu defeated Albert Montanes
7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 6-3, and Razvan Sabau rallied to beat Oscar Hernandez 2-6,
6-1, 6-4.
Sabau will face Andreev in the second round. Hanescu will play Costa.
Also, Potito Starace defeated Stefan Koubek 6-4, 6-2.
Second-seeded Gaston Gaudio withdrew after winning the Generali Open in
Kitzbuehel, Austria, on Sunday, citing a shoulder problem.
"I am very sorry, but after consulting my trainer and physicians I decided
that I have no choice," Gaudio said. "I do not know when I will be able to
compete again. Certainly not this week."
The tournament was also missing defending champion Rafael Nadal, who did
not enter.
