Idea Prokom Open Sopot, Poland August 2, 2005 Nieminen Topples Top Seed Puerta; Kuerten Still Hurts Unseeded Jarkko Nieminen defeated a No. 1 seed for the first time in his career when he ousted Mariano Puerta in the first round of the Idea Prokom Open in Sopot on Tuesday. Finland's No. 1 player defeated Puerta, the 2005 Roland Garros finalist, 6-4, 7-6(1) in one hour, 44 minutes and scored his 20th win of the year. Nieminen scored the only break of the first set in the seventh game. In the second set, Puerta was leading 5-2 before Nieminen charged back to force the tie-break and win on his first match point. Two weeks ago in Stuttgart, Nieminen reached the semifinals where he went down to eventual winner Rafael Nadal. He had the same result earlier this year in Munich where he went down to David Nalbandian. Nieminen next faces Nicolas Almagro in the second round. Almagro advanced over qualifier and countryman Albert Portas 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4. Gustavo Kuerten continued to struggle with injury. The three-time Roland Garros champion was forced to retire with neck pain while down 3-6, 0-4 to third seeded Guillermo Coria. Kuerten has not advanced past the first round of an ATP event since the ATP Masters Series Hamburg in May when he defeated Andrei Pavel. Fourth seeded Carlos Moya overcame Poland's Mariusz Fyrstenberg in a thrilling match 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-5 after 2 hours, 27 minutes. Moya, a finalist in Umag last week, scored the only break of the second set in the fourth game. In final set, Moya got the decisive break in the eleventh game which went eight times over deuce. The Spaniard won the match on his second match point with an ace. Fifth seeded Filippo Volandri eased into the second round with a 6-3, 6-1 win over wild card entry Lukasz Kubot from Poland. Volandri is coming off a semifinal appearance in Umag where he fell to the eventual champion Guillermo Coria in the three sets. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID: Nieminen: “I'm really satisfied with my performance. I came here with good confidence after playing well in Stuttgart two weeks ago. I got a tough draw here, playing the top seed. I was almost seeded myself, so it was tough to play Puerta in the first round.” Puerta: “I lost to a very good opponent today. It's a pity because this tournament is very important to me, I wanted to go a lot further in Sopot. It's my goal to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, so I have to fight every week and give my best. Unfortunately I couldn't do better against Nieminen who's in a big form.” Coria: “It's a pity to win like that. Guga has been having physical problems for quite some time. We had many matches before and I was really looking forward to this one.” “I hope to go far in this tournament, I want to collect as many points as possible, in order to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai.” Kuerten: “It was difficult for me today, it was very painful to play. I've had problems with my neck during the last days and I almost couldn't move two days ago.” About being an ambassador for UNICEF: “I think it's important that people in different countries get the chance to play tennis and develop their skills. I try to help as much as I can, especially in Brazil.” Moya: “This was a very difficult match coming from last week in Umag where the conditions were completely different. I knew that Fyrstenberg was an excellent doubles player, but today I saw that he also plays very well in singles. It was a difficult match for me, playing against a lefty and still being a little bit tired after the final on Sunday.”
