Starace Downs Another Seed in Sopot;
Coria into Second Straight Semi
Third seeded Guillermo Coria is riding an eight-match
winning streak into the semifinals at the IDEA Prokom Open,
having swept the title in Umag last week. But Potito
Starace has been making the most noise, ousting a seeded
player for the second time in two days on Friday.
On Friday, Starace ousted No. 6 seed Jose Acasuso of
Argentina 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours, 18 minutes.
After Starace went 3-0 up in the first set, Acasuso reeled
in five straight games, breaking serve twice, before taking
it 6-4. In the second and final sets, Starace got the
decisive breaks in last games of both sets.
Starace, who resides in Cervinara a town of 12,000 in the
south of Italy, is into the second semifinal of his career.
Roger Federer stopped his run in the semifinals at Gstaad
last year.
He next faces French teen Gael Monfils for the second time
this year. Starace won their only previous meeting in the
first round of Stuttgart.
Monfils downed No. 8 seed Victor Hanescu of Romania 6-3,
6-3 in one hour, 13 minutes to reach his first career ATP
semifinal.
The 18-year-old from Paris won five straight games in the
first set to go up 5-1. In the second set, there were five
breaks with Monfils getting three of them for the win.
2003 champion Guillermo Coria continued to roll on clay,
stopping No. 7 seed Russian Igor Andreev 6-4, 7-6(5).
Coria took the first set by scoring the only break in the
ninth game. In the second set, Coria ran his lead to 5-2
lead before Andreev charged back to force the tie-break.
Coria closed it out on his first match point.
Last week, Coria jumped three positions to No 5 in the
INDESIT ATP race when he took the title at the Croatia
Open.
He takes on Germany's Florian Mayer (pictured) in the
semifinals. Coria is 3-0 in semifinal matches this year,
having advanced to the finals at the ATP Masters Series in
Monte Carlo and Rome and also at the Croatia Open.
Mayer defeated Jarkko Nieminen 6-2, 6-2 in 52 minutes to
reach his first semifinal since Bucharest in 2004. His best
result this year was when he reached the Round of 16 in
Miami where he fell to Taylor Dent.
Third seeds Lucas Arnold and Sebastian Prieto of Argentina
defeated countrymen and top seeds Martin Garcia and Mariano
Hood 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5) to advance to the doubles final where
they will face the winners of No. 4 seeds
Fyrstenberg/Matkowski vs. Coetzee/Haggard.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Mayer: “I played a very good match today. I think Nieminen
was a little bit tired after his three set match against
Almagro, he did many mistakes. I like the conditions in
Sopot, I feel very well here.”
About playing Coria:
”It is very tough to win against him. I beat him in
Wimbledon last year, but on clay it's different. You have
to put a lot of pressure on him, because he nearly doesn't
any mistakes.”
Coria: “I had the match under control until 5-2 in the
second set. Then Andreev started playing very well, hitting
incredible shots. At that point, the level became very
equal and I'm happy to be through.”
About playing Mayer:
“He's also a very talented player who plays nice drop
shots. I lost against him in Wimbledon last year, but I
beat him on clay during the World Team Cup this summer.”
Starace: “I started very concentrated, but then I lost the
first set. However I stayed in the match all the time, I'm
happy that I finally won it. I feel good mentally and
physically and am happy about having reached my first
semifinal in 2005. I want to reach the final and it would
be great to win the tournament.”
