Canas files appeal over doping sanction

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- Argentine tennis player Guillermo Canas
has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in a bid to overturn
his two-year doping suspension.
The ATP Tour suspended Canas after he tested positive for a diuretic in
February at the Mexican Open in Acapulco. Canas wants CAS, the highest
court in sport, to lift the suspension pending a final ruling in the case.
CAS usually rules within four months of an appeal.
Canas was ranked No. 10 on Aug. 8 when the ATP Tour banned him from
competition until June 11, 2007.
The 27-year-old Canas has said he never knowingly ingested a banned
substance. Diuretics increase urine production and are used to treat
patients with renal problems. They can also mask the presence of other
banned substances such as steroids.
A French Open quarterfinalist this year, Canas has won six ATP tour events
in his career.
