Early Arrival Pays Dividends for Fans

It pays to be organised if you want to make your Australian Open 2006
experience as enjoyable as possible.
For Erin and Lauren, that meant an early morning trip on Sunday from
Frankston in Melbourne's outer suburbs to Melbourne Park in order to
ensure a seat in the indoor, and air-conditioned, Vodafone Arena.
The pair was first in line at eight o'clock Sunday morning, but during
the next two hours leading up to 10am, when gates are opened to the public,
the queue to get in had grown to several hundred people.
According to Erin, it was a simple plan. Get in early, avoid the heat and
enjoy the tennis.
"We're going to sit here in Vodafone all day. We want to sit just behind
the players," Erin explained.
It has been a common sight during the early mornings of Australian Open
2006 to see hordes of fans lining up at the main Swan Street gate,
Vodafone Arena as well as the entrance to Garden Square at the rear
of the complex.
Many have schedules in hand, mapping out which courts to be at to see
their favourite players in action.
Also thinking along similar lines were Argentine trio Andrea, Luisa and
Valentin, who were keen to secure their place in time for compatriot
David Nalbandian's fourth-round clash with Tommy Robredo.
"We want to watch Nalbandian play," Valentin said.
"We have to get seats, and we have to get good seats (in the shade and
the air conditioning) so we can support Nalbandian," Luisa said, adding
that they were going to be part of the Argentine cheer squad.
The early arrival was a lesson learned from Saturday, when they sweltered
in the sunshine at Show Court Two watching another of their heroes, Juan
Ignacio Chela, take two hours and four minutes to account for Belgian
Kristof Vliegen.
"It was really hot. It wasn't as bad for us as it was for him. At least
we had an umbrella," Luisa said.
All three are working in Sydney at the moment and attended the Davis Cup
quarter-final between Australia and Argentina last year, cheering on with
delight as Nalbandian secured the tie for the visitors with a straight-sets
win over Lleyton Hewitt.
"We went to the Davis Cup quarter-final and the best match was when
Nalbandian beat Hewitt. That was the best match," Luisa said.
