Kuerten Defeats Volandri For First Win Since '05 US Open
Three-time Roland Garros champion Gustavo Kuerten claimed his first ATP-level
match win in more than a year Tuesday with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over
seventh-seeded Italian Filippo Volandri on home soil in Costa do Sauipe, Brazil
Kuerten served brilliantly, firing 13 aces and missing just eight first serves
in the match. He did not face a break point and dropped just seven points on
serve during the match.
Kuerten, 30, came into the tournament having lost in the first round of last
week's challenger in his hometown of Florianopolis and, two weeks ago, having
lost both round-robin matches in Vina del Mar. His last ATP-level win came in
the first round of the 2005 US Open.
Kuerten, who has played just 20 matches in the past two years due to a hip
injury, won the Costa do Sauipe title in 2002 (d. Coria) and 2004 (d. Calleri).
Kuerten has won 20 ATP titles.
Currently ranked No. 1076, the former World No. 1 next plays the winner of
fellow Brazilian Flavio Saretta and Italian Alessio Di Mauro.
Second seed Agustin Calleri defeated fellow Argentine, qualifier Diego
Hartfield, 6-4, 6-1 to reach the second round. The 2004 finalist is playing
just his third event of 2007, having reached the Auckland semifinals and the
first round of the Australian Open.
No other matches were completed on Day 2 as rain drenched the tournament
