Hantuchova hitting the Italian books hard
Coming off a second-round upset at the Pilot Pen, Daniela Hantuchova is the
ninth seed at the U.S. Open. Despite years of consistent play, the 24-year-old
Slovak has just two titles, at Indian Wells in 2002 and this year.
But the classically trained pianist has other interests -- she's been studying
Italian to add to her Slovak, German and English, she said by telephone from
New Haven Thursday. She also plans to study economic management or fashion
after her playing career.

'Nando: No ad from Aussie or Ping-Pong
Fernando Gonzalez, a late bloomer at age 27, reached his first Grand Slam final
this year in Australia, but success at the only other hardcourt major gives him
no edge in New York, he said.
"At the U.S. Open, you never have an advantage," the seventh seed said by
telephone in New York Thursday.
The hard-hitting Chilean likes table tennis, too, but that's not much help
either, he said.
"Ping-Pong? I like it," Gonzalez said. "The ball is very light, and the racquet
is too short, but the need for reaction is big."

NYC nightlife not off limits for Monaco
Juan Monaco, whose age, 23, is also the Argentine's U.S. Open seed, won three
clay-court tournaments this year, but he has thrice been a first-round loser in
Queens.
So he got some help -- Argentine actress Luisana Lopilato, his girlfriend.
"I've been to New York four times, but unfortunately I haven't had a chance to
get to know the city," Monaco said by telephone late Wednesday after practice
in New Haven.
"I'm going to take the initiative this time, now that my girlfriend is in town
with me and really try to go out and see the city together."
