Coria Drives Away with MercedesCup
Guillermo Coria closed on a berth to Tennis Masters Cup Houston with his
second German title of the season in Stuttgart.
Argentine No.1 Guillermo Coria won his third ATP title in his seventh career
final with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 win over Spain's Tommy Robredo in a final lasting
one hour and forty minutes. Coria didn't lose a set all week, dropping just
19 games in five matches en route to the title. He also won his second German
tournament in two months after capturing the Tennis Masters Hamburg crown in
May.
In the final Robredo was 2-1 up with a break in the first set before Coria
won six straight games. Robredo also broke immediately in the third set to
lead 1-0, then the Argentine again reeled off six games in a row to take the
set 6-1.
En route to the title Coria defeated Paul-Henri Mathieu (lost 8 games), David
Ferrer (2), defending champion and No. 12 seed Mikhail Youzhny (0), Feliciano
Lopez (4), as well as No. 9 seed Tommy Robredo (5) in Sunday's title match.
Coria earned 50 ATP Champions Race points, E 118,000, and a brand new
Mercedes-Benz CLK 240 Cabriolet. Robredo walked away with 35 ATP Champions
Race points,E 62,000, and a Mountain Bike from Mercedes-Benz.
Coria went one step further in Stuttgart than his coach, Alberto Mancini,
who lost to Michael Stich in the final in 1991. Robredo was trying to add
the second title, in his third career final, to his collection after winning
in Sopot in 2001. The Spaniard had defeated Lars Burgsmuller, qualifier Jiri
Vanek, Filippo Volandri and No. 6 seed Fernando Gonzalez in the semifinals.
DOUBLES FINAL
Unseeded Czechs Tomas Cibulec and Pavel Vizner won their second tournament
together ('03 Copenhagen) by defeating No. 3 seeds Yevgeny Kafelnikov and
Kevin Ullyett 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Cibulec and Vizner were down a set and a break
in the final but managed to come back and win the title in one hour and 38
minutes. Cibulec won his third individual doubles title, while Vizner
captured his fifth. Kafelnikov and Ullyett were playing for the first time.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Coria: "I'm very happy; it went really quick. I started a little bit nervous
when Tommy broke my serve. When I broke back I started to feel more
confident. The key was that I was really concentrated and tried to play my
game. Tommy was rushing a little bit; he didn't find a way to win the points.
"The first match of the tournament [against Mathieu] was the most difficult
of the week. I hadn't played on clay since Roland Garros. You need one match
to get confidence, that's why the first match is always the toughest."
"I'm happy to have won a car. Maybe I will take Alberto for a ride."
"I'm very happy to have won the two most important tournaments in Germany.
I felt that I played more consistent this week than in Hamburg."
"My determination to reach the Masters Cup makes me play my best tennis."
Robredo: "I think Guillermo played a great match. He is one of the best
players; he is really mentally strong. I will try to make it harder for him
next time. I wasn't nervous; I was a break up in the first set. But it's
tough to serve because he always puts you under pressure. It was really
tough mentally. You have to be 200 per cent to win the point."
"I tried to hit harder and harder but I made a lot of unforced errors. He
never missed one ball. He also knows where you will hit the ball. He makes
you press too much and at the end you will make the mistake. I was tired, I
wasn't 100 per cent to play long rallies."
"It's bitter to lose the final but this week was really good for me.
Tomorrow I will have improved my ranking. It's always a good week when you
finish second in a tournament. If it's possible for me to finish the year in
the Top 20 it would be great."
Cibulec: "It's unbelievable. We won our second tournament this year. It's
very satisfying. We improved our game match by match. We were confident and
feeling strong."
Vizner: "I don't know what to say! This is the biggest win ever for us. We
play solid together. So far it's a good season."
