Massu Saves 3 M.P. To Deny Mathieu
Top seed Nicolas Massu saved three match points against Frenchman
Paul-Henri Mathieu to win his third career title and second of the
year (Amersfoort) at the Campionati Internazionali Di Sicilia in
Palermo.
It was the second time Massu had saved match points in a final before
going on to win the title. Last year he rallied from 2-6, 1-5 and saved
two match points to defeat Agustin Calleri in the Buenos Aires final.
Following his victory in the Szczecin Challenger and his appearance in
the Bucharest final, Massu has won 14 of 15 matches on clay since the
US Open.
Mathieu held three consecutive match points when he served for the match
at 6-5, 40/0, but Massu won 12 consecutive points to close out the match
1-6, 6-2, 7-6(0). The Chilean improved to 30-15 at ATP level this season.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Massu: "I started very tired the match today. I played good at some
points but it was very difficult. I was kind of slow. He was playing
great tennis but still I was tired. I have played 15 matches in 18
days on clay and that is tough. But I always said you have to take
advantage of the good moments. I always kept fighting even when I
was with three match points against. I think he got a bit tense,
we all do, but I noticed it and tried to stay calm and play. I played
him in the way he had to beat me. I was not going to give him anything.
He had to beat me.
"I want to reach the top. My dreams are to reach the Top 10, win Roland
Garros, win a Davis Cup and win in Vina del Mar, my home city. I am already
among the Top 25 and I want more."
Mathieu: "I am happy with reaching the final but obviously I did not like
losing having three match points. I did get nervous serving for the match
but that is normal. This is the way it is in tennis. He played well and
did not make mistakes during the match points. I believe I had a good
tournament because I always fought, but I know I can play better. Still
it is a good thing I always kept on fighting."
