Won first career Challenger title in Quito (d. M. Sanchez).
Went 2-0 vs. Colombia in Davis Cup.
1999-Improved his year-end ranking by playing entire season on Challenger
circuit.
Posted a 32-17 record in Challenger tournaments and won three titles in
Biella, Quito and Santiago.
2000-Reached back-to-back QF in Atlanta and San Luis Potosi Challenger.
Enjoyed best week of his career in Orlando in May, dropping one set en route
to final, losing to countryman Gonzalez in youngest final of year.
Two finalists grew up 500 yards apart in Chile.

PERSONAL
Began playing tennis at age five in his hometown of Vina del Mar, a resort
town on coast 45 minutes from Santiago, with his grandfather, Ladislao, who
is from Hungary.
Grandfather took Nicolas and his older brother Jorge to play.
Father, Manuel, is an engineer, and mother, Sonia, is a housewife.
Also has one younger brother, Stefano.
Enjoyed an outstanding junior career, finishing No. 5 in singles and No. 1
in doubles in 1997 world junior rankings.
Captured Orange Bowl in singles (d. Rake) and won doubles titles at Wimbledon
(w/Horna) and US Open (w/F. Gonzalez).
Enjoys soccer and favorite team is Everton from Vina del Mar.
Has a 16-9 career Davis Cup record (12-4 in singles) in 12 ties.
Carried his country's flag during opening ceremonies at Sydney Olympics.
