Resistance is futile -- and at this point, contrarian, self-indulgent and
embarrassing. When a numbers fetishist claims that Rose's performance in
2010-11 ranks no higher than sixth place on a five-slot ballot, that person
is imagining some other, non-existent award. Go buy a trophy -- say, a big
bronze slide-rule -- slap a name on it and hand that out. Just don't call it
the MVP.
2. Dwight Howard, Magic (50-29)

We can agree with Stan Van Gundy that no player in the league this season
affected as many possessions as Howard, a standard that his backers embrace.
But given the Magic's No. 4 seed -- and the possessions Howard isn't around
for because of those suspension-triggering technicals -- he hasn't affected
enough games (which are more than a stack of possessions, stats mongers).
3. Kobe Bryant, Lakers (55-23)

"If L.A. runs the table [from a 16-1 post-All-Star stretch], Bryant will be
hard to ignore in this Race." That was last week's pledge. Since then: 1-3.
The Lakers' shooting star isn't getting ignored here -- third place is pretty
strong -- but with that cast, that coach, expectations may have been met but
they were not exceeded. And the "Kobe has only one MVP" gripe has no bearing
on a seasonal award. A "career MVP" award doesn't exist -- it's called a Hall
of Fame induction.
4. LeBron James, Heat (54-24)

Critics who latched onto the Heat's loss to an already-eliminated Milwaukee,
with Dwyane Wade sitting out, weren't playing fair in pushing a one-game
sample size at The Race. More compelling is that, while Miami fans argue
over James or Wade as their team's deserving MVP rep, James, Wade and Chris
Bosh all have publicly backed Rose. James knows his past two seasons were
more special, and more deserving, than this one.

This is a trickier spot than one might expect, since it's the last slot on
the actual MVP ballot and thus carries real weight (our Nos. 6-10 are for
argument's sake and variety during the season). Durant, the preseason MVP
pick of many, has been doing some volume shooting -- he was 38 of 92 (41.3
percent) this week for his 27.3 ppg -- en route to a second straight scoring
title.
6. Dirk Nowitzki, Mavs (53-25)

Not an MVP-worthy push to the end by the Dirkster or his team, which is OK
given Dallas' ambitions for playing into late May and June. But they don't
get to have those if not for Nowitzki's accuracy from the field and the line
or his scoring (Mavs are 36-13 when he scores at least 20).

Turns out Wade and James were right early in the season when they said that
teaming up would hurt their MVP chances. Most top candidates -- think Rose
or Howard -- face this reality nightly: "If I don't do it tonight, no one
else here will." The two Heat stars, with each other around, knew that pressure
up until this season but freed themselves from it in July. Made them great
contenders for the Larry O'Brien trophy but not the Maurice Podoloff.

Since were down in the ceremonial spots, we're giving a big ceremonial round
of applause to Ginobili, who shouldered his greatest share of Spurs
responsibility yet in that team's changing dynamic. Sure, he has help. Sure,
his stats sometimes look like a relative train wreck. But the best record in
the league doesn't materialize in San Antonio if this guy isn't
Swiss-Army-knifing all over the court for Popovich and crew.

He wasn't asked to be Derrick Rose, he hasn't had to be Rose and he isn't
Rose, so enough with the fantasy-league comparisons. Incredible athlete,
marvelous sidekick, still-formidable upside. But carrying a team and moving
up this list is something for 2011-12, not now.

If Miami and OKC have tandems worthy of consideration, how can the Lakers not?
Gasol's skills and Bryant's ability to play with him (most of the time) are
inseparable from what L.A. has and still might accomplish. Odom will win the
Sixth Man Award because Gasol holds down the starter's spot. Bynum gets all
the hand-writing because Gasol gets taken for granted up front. (Take heart,
LaMarcus Aldridge, you'll do better in the Most Improved Player balloting.)
