Two years on, Liverpool are facing the prospect of gaining a sixth star in a repeat of the 2005 final against AC Milan. In the build up to the game,adidas, Liverpool’s kit sponsor, managed to catch up with five of this season’s star players. Each player was asked to write or draw their ‘impossible’ moment on a blank canvas to convey how they overcame their ‘impossible’ during the Champions League and then explain what that moment meant to them. The following transcript explains their ‘impossible’ stories, reflecting on moments from this season and looking forward to the Champions League Final: Steven Gerrard The ‘Impossible’: ‧ Istanbul, Leading the comeback, Lifting the trophy, Impossible is Nothing Gerrard talked in depth about his feelings during the game and the emotions experienced. “It was the best night of my football career so far. Being 3-0 down at half time we had a big mountain to climb, but we managed to get up that mountain and turned it round”. He continued: “With the supporters behind us, a great manager and top quality players in the dressing room, it was important to keep as much belief as possible, keep playing and trying to score to get back in the game. Belief is the most important thing you need to have as players, as a team and as a supporter. The supporters were fantastic, with us all the way through Dirk Kuyt The ‘Impossible’: ‧ 1st Season, 1st Champions League Final, Impossible is Nothing Talking about his first season Kuyt commented, “I came to a European top club to win trophies, but you never can imagine that you are reaching the final in the first year, you only can dream about it. It is the first time I have played Champions League ever which is a big difference, but I feel that I have done well over the season. We have been playing well in the league and have shown everyone that we deserve to be in the final”. On the importance of the supporters: “The crowd at Liverpool is amazing and really important for the team and every game they help us a lot and we respect and need them. It is because of them that we have reached the final. We have had difficult opponents throughout the competition, but we were focused on every game and gave 100% and the crowd makes a big difference compared to other teams” On hitting the winning penalty against Chelsea: “It was an amazing game and unbelievable that it had to be decided on penalties. I took the penalty and had a good feeling. I had the crowd and whole of Liverpool behind me and the only thing I was thinking was that I had to shoot the ball into the back of the net”.
