Every player is entitled to choose whichever offer he sees fit after six
years of service time. In Thome's case, he'd given the Tribe more than
eight of his prime years. Even if Thome had stayed with the Tribe rather
than gone to Philadelphia, that contract would have expired by now.
Thome was traded to the White Sox by the Phillies to give way to the imminent
Ryan Howard. He did waive his no-trade clause, but with his advanced age and
declining defensive value, it was only natural for him to return to the AL,
where he could be used as the DH.
This season, the Twins picked Thome up when no other team wanted him as a
full-time player, so it was not like he really had a choice. I believe he
has nothing against his old team -- he would wear an Indians cap when he is
inducted into the HOF -- and I don't recall he has ever done anything
disrespectful to the Tribe fans.
I think as his career winds down, we should take a step back to appreciate
his greatness and cheer for all his accomplishments.
