Several rookies could be impact players in '11 By Jonathan Mayo / MLB.com The general rule of thumb used to be that rookies were to be brought along slowly. Sure, there'd be an exception here and there, but even those who were Rookie of the Year candidates tended not to be thrown into the fire too quickly and certainly weren't expected to make major contributions to pennant races. Boy, times have changed. Last year, the National League Rookie of the Year helped shepherd a pitching staff to a World Series title. The closer on the other team in the Fall Classic turned out to be the ROY in the American League. Nos. 2 and 3 in the NL were in pennant races, with the runner-up playing in the postseason. Buster Posey, Neftali Feliz, Jason Heyward and Jaime Garcia didn't just come up and play well, they made a huge impact and helped their teams compete in 2010. What will the Class of '11 possibly do for an encore? Here are some early candidates for impact rookies to watch as camps open in Florida and Arizona (rank in MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects list appears in parentheses). National League Brandon Belt, 1B, Giants (26): Calling someone the next Posey certainly isn't fair, but Belt has put himself in the position to be the next impact hitter to come up from the Giants' system and contribute in San Francisco. After hitting .352/.455/.620 across three levels last year, even if he starts the year in Triple-A, he's going to get a chance at first or left field before long. Braves (1B Freddie Freeman -- 17, LHP Mike Minor -- 21, RHP Craig Kimbrel): Heyward will be getting plenty of help from his friends in '11. Freeman will be the everyday first baseman and should hit for a decent average, drive in some runs and see his power continue to develop. Minor hit a bit of a wall when he came up last year, but he's poised to compete for the No. 5 spot in the rotation (along with another potential rookie contributor, Brandon Beachy). Kimbrel could be this year's Feliz, a rookie closer for a contending team. Domonic Brown, OF, Phillies (3): Even if he begins the year in a platoon role in right field or perhaps playing every day in Triple-A, it's hard to imagine the toolsy outfielder not working his way into the lineup on a more regular basis. His power and speed combination could be the extra ingredient an already-stocked Phillies roster needs to pull away in the NL East. Aroldis Chapman, LHP, Reds (6): So he's not a starter now. That doesn't mean he can't have a tremendous impact as the Reds try to repeat in the much more competitive NL Central. They were middle of the pack in relief ERA in 2010, which won't cut it this season as the teams around them have improved. With Chapman there all year -- perhaps even closing at some point -- they should move up in the rankings. Jarrod Parker, RHP, D-backs (29): Arizona obviously will need more than one player to turn things around after a last-place finish in 2010, but Parker is a good start. After missing last year following Tommy John surgery, he's ready to compete for a spot this spring. Even if he starts the year in Triple-A to get some work in, he'll provide a big boost to Arizona's rotation sooner rather than later. Others to watch: Matt Dominguez, 3B, Marlins; Jordan Lyles, RHP, Astros (31); Devin Mesoraco, C, Reds (45); Wilin Rosario, C, Rockies (41) American League J.P. Arencibia, C (48)/Kyle Drabek, RHP (12), Blue Jays: It's an uphill battle for Toronto to move past the juggernauts within its own division, but it starts with homegrown products like this future battery. Arencibia might not hit for average, but he's got power to spare and should drive in runs. The big key is how he handles the pitching staff, including Drabek, who's ready to join the back end of the rotation now, but has the chance to be much more than that. Jeremy Hellickson, RHP, Rays (2): He's the guy who made it possible for the Rays to feel comfortable with trading Matt Garza to the Cubs in January. Hellickson doesn't have to be Garza-esque right off the bat to help Tampa Bay compete, but that doesn't mean he won't be. His combination of stuff plus command should help him succeed in the ultra-competitive AL East. Michael Pineda, RHP (13)/Dustin Ackley, 2B (5), Mariners: Coming off a 100-loss season, Seattle needs a lot of help to turn things around. Pineda has the stuff and imposing size to be a frontline starter. He could get moving in that direction by breaking camp as the Mariners' No. 5 guy. Ackley, fresh off winning the Arizona Fall League MVP, has reportedly added strength this offseason. With the club's struggles to score runs a year ago fresh in everyone's minds, Ackley could make quite a strong push to start the year as Seattle's second baseman. Jesus Montero, C, Yankees (9): The signing of Russell Martin may make it less likely that Montero breaks camp with the Bronx Bombers, but his bat might be too big to ignore for long. Even if he gets some time in Triple-A to continue answering questions about his catching, he could hit his way into the lineup before long. Chris Sale, LHP, White Sox (25): The first of the 2010 Draft class to hit the big leagues, this young southpaw certainly didn't seem overwhelmed by getting there. He's got frontline starter stuff and showed last year that he has the ability to close. He'll get a long look in the rotation this spring, but the White Sox must love knowing they have a dominant short reliever if they need one as well. Others to watch: Kyle Gibson, RHP, Twins (40); Desmond Jennings, OF, Rays (11), Jake McGee, LHP, Rays; Mike Moustakas, 3B, Royals (7) http://tinyurl.com/4ruy3ns --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2010年有不少隻菜鳥即戰力, 像是Mike Leake,Neftali Feliz,Buster Posey,Stephen Strasburg ,Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch,Jason Heyward 看了一些rapid impact的文章,提到2010年的新秀質量可能是自2001以來最優秀之一 Mike Leake 更是歷史上第21位業餘選秀簽約後直接上大聯盟的菜鳥 今年也有不少阿菜可能會是即戰力 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 另外補上Straight to the Big Leagues的球員(標紅色為All-star等級,黃色為HOF等級) 1.Mike Adamson 1967 Baltimore Orioles 2.Steve Dunning 1970 Cleveland Indians 3.Burt Hooton 1971 Chicago Cubs 4.Rob Ellis 1971 Milwaukee Brewers 史上第一位打者,可惜生涯不長成績也不算是戰力 5.Pete Broberg 1971 Washington Senators 6.Dave Roberts 1972 San Diego Padres 7.Dick Ruthven 1973 Philadelphia Phillies 8.Dave Winfield 1973 San Diego Padres 9.David Clyde 1973 Texas Rangers 10.Eddie Bane 1973 Minnesota Twins 11.Mike Morgan 1978 Oakland Athletics 12.Bob Horner 1978 Atlanta Braves 13.Tim Conroy 1978 Oakland Athletics 14.Brian Milner 1978 Toronto Blue Jays 15.Pete Incaviglia 1968 Texas Rangers 第一年就有30發HR,第一年三圍.250/.320/.463 16.Jim Abbott 1989 California Angels 獨臂左投傳奇 17.John Olerud 1989 Toronto Blue Jays 18.Darren Dreifort 1994 Los Angeles Dodgers 19.Ariel Prieto 1995 Oakland Athletics 20.Xavier Nady 2000 San Diego Padres 只打一個打數就下去 21.Mike Leake 2010 Cincinnati Reds 8W4L ERA 4.23 IP 138.1 http://www.baseball-almanac.com/feats/feats9.shtml -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.60.223.108
