BIG-MATCH FACTS
The tie in context
‧ This is one of three fourth round ties bringing together Premier League
and League One clubs.
‧ Southampton are one of six third tier survivors, trying to reach the last
16.
Gulf in class
‧ Manchester United are 47 places higher than the Saints on the league
ladder.
Head-to-head
‧ Manchester United have won almost half of their competitive matches
against Southampton; 56 of 109.
‧ The Red Devils are on a five-match winning sequence against the Saints in
all competitions.
‧ James Beattie scored in the 88th minute in Southampton's most recent
victory over the Old Trafford club; 1-0 at St Mary's in the Premier
League on 31 August 2003.
FA Cup records and best performances
‧ On the last three occasions these clubs have been paired together in the
FA Cup, Manchester United have been victorious and have amassed a 9-0
aggregate score, including 3-0 on this ground in the third round two
seasons ago.
‧ The Saints last knocked out United at this fourth round stage in 1992.
They fought out a goalless draw in Hampshire and ended 2-2 after extra time
at Old Trafford, before the underdogs prevailed in a penalty shoot-out.
‧ The greatest day in Southampton's history was the 1-0 victory over
Manchester United in the 1976 final.
SOUTHAMPTON
Current form
‧ Saturday's 2-0 away defeat to Tranmere ended a six-game unbeaten sequence
of five wins and a draw in all competitions.
‧ Brentford were the last visiting club to win at St Mary's on 11 December.
Since then, Southampton have won three and drawn one of four games, and
have kept clean sheets in the last three.
FA Cup form
‧ This is the seventh successive round that Southampton have been drawn at
home.
‧ They are aiming to qualify for the fifth round for the fifth time in seven
seasons.
‧ Nigel Adkins' side disposed of Premier League Blackpool in the third

MANCHESTER UNITED

‧ Undefeated in 10 in all competitions (W7, D3).
‧ The 4-0 defeat to West Ham at Upton Park in the quarter-finals of the
Carling Cup on 30 November, is their only loss in 34 matches this season.
FA Cup form
‧ Last won the competition for a record 11th time in 2004, beating Millwall
in the final.
‧ Since then they have been losing finalists twice.
‧ Overcame Liverpool in this season's third round.
‧ Last lost to lower division opposition in last season's third round when
League One Leeds defeated them 1-0 at Old Trafford.

M.E.N Prediction: Southampton 1-2 United
- with all United's defensive worries, they might concede, but they should
still win
Key opponent:
Oxlade-Chamberlain - highly rated youngster will be out to prove he belongs
in this company
Lawro's predictions Southampton 0-2 United
Nigel Adkins has done a great job since taking charge of Southampton in
September. They had a blip at Tranmere on Saturday but I'm told Rovers are a
bit of a bogey team for them, and they have been going really well in League
One otherwise.
Saints have got loads of goals in their side, and they turned Blackpool over
in the last round, but I think they should just try to enjoy their big day
against United rather than hoping too much for a repeat result.
Yes, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will probably change his
team around, especially because they have got another midweek Premier League
game against Aston Villa on Tuesday, but they should still be too strong for
Southampton.
