MATCH PREVIEW
- Before last week's humiliating 6-1 derby defeat at home to Manchester City,
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said that all would not be lost for United
should they suffer defeat - pointing to his side's almost traditional
upsurge in form in the second half of Premier League campaigns.
- With 29 games to play he is, of course, quite right - but another defeat on
Saturday would get some of the more eager Nostradamus wannabes proclaiming
"the end of the title challenge is nigh". Not one of them would or could
have predicted what happened last Sunday.
- United have dropped seven points in their last four league games. The record
thrashing speaks for itself, but the other points 'lost' were draws at Stoke
and Liverpool in their last two matches away from Old Trafford. Most would
consider those healthy points gained.
- This one is a fixture in the same mould, although Everton haven't got going
on home soil yet this season.
- As usual though, Goodison will be rocking and Everton will be wound up to
send Manchester United home without a win for their fourth visit in a row.
Last time gave us one of the best matches of the entire season, with the
Toffees coming back from 1-3 down entering injury time to draw 3-3 - and
leave David Moyes berating the officials after they blew for full-time when
his team might have won it!
- What will happen this time? Well, Everton's extra-time Carling Cup efforts
against Chelsea might have an effect, especially as an entirely fresh United
team strolled through their tie at Aldershot the night before. But that's as
far as I go with hard and fast predictions. I'll leave those to Nostradamus.
Or Lawro.
MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
Everton have won only one of the past 12 matches between the two sides.
They have only defeated Manchester United three times in their 19 Premier
League meetings at Goodison Park.
United have won 13 of those games, scoring 38 times - an average of two goals
a game.
Everton
Everton's record against teams in the top half of the table is the worst in
the division.
Six of their 10 Premier League goals this season have come in the final 10
minutes of their matches.
Everton have not kept a clean sheet in eight league and cup matches.
Last season, Leighton Baines was involved in 16 Everton league goals (notching
five goals and 11 assists). So far, he has been involved in one (one goal, no
assists).
Manchester United
Second-placed United come into the match off a 6-1 loss to title-challenging
neighbours Manchester City - their heaviest-ever Premier League defeat.
United have not suffered back-to-back defeats for 31 matches in all
competitions.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side have only won two of their past six matches.
United's top goal-scorer Wayne Rooney (nine in the league, 11 in all
competitions) has not scored in the club's past four Premier League matches.
His last league goal came in a 3-1 win against Chelsea on 18 September.
M.E.N Prediction: Everton 0-1 United
- always tough at Goodison, but surely United will react to last Sunday
Key opponent:
Leon Osman - lively midfielder one of the more under-rated Premier League
operators
Lawro's predictions Everton 1-2 United
This is a huge game for Manchester United after they were beaten so heavily
in last weekend's Manchester derby, but they will be ready for it.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson essentially played his second string in their
midweek win over Aldershot in the Carling Cup and one of the things we have
learned from Ferguson down the years is that there is often a backlash after
a bad defeat, so we should definitely expect a reaction here.
Everton had a tough game against Chelsea on Wednesday, losing in extra-time,
and although they have a good record against United at Goodison Park in the
last couple of years I think it is going to be very difficult for them to
stop United from bouncing back with a win here.
The Toffees beat Fulham last week but they had a run of tough games before
that where they didn't pick up any points and I cannot see them stopping a
United side with something to prove.
That cup defeat by Chelsea means that, when Everton boss Moyes celebrates his
10th anniversary as manager in March, he will have completed a decade in
charge without winning a trophy.
In the 1980s that would have been seen as a disappointing record but a lot
has changed since then. Take away the top six in the Premier League, and you
could say that success for the rest is about staying up.
Money rules football and currently it is almost impossible for Everton to
compete with the leading clubs financially. For them to consistently be in
that group between the bottom 10 and the top six is an achievement, and for
Moyes to have managed four top six finishes in that time is outstanding.
Moyes has made very few bad buys, brings young players through and has
constructed a strong squad. I cannot understand why some Everton fans
criticise him.
