ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
All season long, as Daisuke Matsuzaka [stats] was winning game
after game, it was understood he was not an ace.
He put up ace-like numbers, but, no, sorry, Josh Beckett [stats]
remained the incumbent top dog and that’s just the way it was
going to be.
Even when Beckett experienced all kinds of aches and pains, even
when he faltered, even when he went on the disabled list, it only
meant young left-hander Jon Lester [stats] was brought in as a
sort of fill-in ace.
The Dice Man, meanwhile, kept winning. He was the best five-inning
starter in the business, a backhanded compliment delivered to a
right-handed pitcher.
But the Red Sox [team stats] handed Matsuzaka the ball for Game 1
of the American League Championship Series against the Tampa Bay
Rays last night at Tropicana Field, and, who knows, perhaps the
man somehow got it into his head that the assignment meant he’s
the No. 1 on this team.
So he went out and pitched like a No. 1. He had a no-hitter going
until Carl Crawford led off the seventh with a single to right and
then pitched out of a jam in which the Rays had runners at the
corners with nobody out. He walked the bases loaded in the first
inning, but got out of that mess, too.
Carl Crawford
Surprisingly, he came out to start the eighth inning, this after
having already thrown 105 pitches.
Put it all together and you have the Dice Man leading the Red Sox
to their 2-0 Game 1 victory over the Rays, submitting what is
inarguably his best performance since he arrived from Japan.
“He doesn’t give in,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “He
threw all his pitches, so hitters have to respect (him). Even in
tight situations, he doesn’t become a one-pitch pitcher. He
throws a two-seamer, a cutter, changeup, fastball, so they can’t
sit on one pitch.”
Said third baseman Kevin Youkilis [stats]: “He threw a two-seamer
to Carlos Pena that moved like a foot. It just looked like he had
great stuff tonight and was very effective with all his pitches.”
Not all his pitches: In Matsuzaka’s view, his fastball was not
playoff-worthy.
“I had to rely more on those secondary pitches,” he said. “With
my fastball not where I wanted it to be, I did my best to use
those secondary pitches to the corners.”
For a guy who wound up being brilliant, brilliance was not a word
that would have been used to describe how Matsuzaka’s evening
began. It was classic Dice-K: boring.
Ball one, ball two. Strike. Ball three. Strike. Ball four. Within
minutes - it seemed like hours - Matsuzaka had loaded the bases,
the inning going this way: Walk, fly to left, walk, punchout,
walk, grounder to second.
But something happened between the first inning and the second
inning. As reliever Justin Masterson put it so masterfully, “He
pounded the zone . . . eventually.”
Until Crawford’s hit leading off the seventh, he had retired 16
of 17 batters. And he wasn’t just striking guys out, he was
punching guys out. And when you’re punching guys out - opposing
hitters standing awkwardly, sheepishly at the plate, their knees
buckling, their heads cocked at weird angles, their eyes darting
in every direction - it means you are truly dealing.
And he wasn’t just dealing . . . he was dealing with it.
After Crawford’s single, Cliff Floyd followed with a single to
center, sending Crawford to third.
Crawford
It was here that Matsuzaka did his best, most important - and,
yes, most entertaining - pitching as a member of the Red Sox [team
stats]. At a time when both Hideki Okajima [stats] and Manny
Delcarmen were warming up along the left-field foul line,
Matsuzaka got Dioner Navarro on a fly to shallow center, struck
out Gabe Gross and then had Jason Bartlett hit into a fielder’s
choice.
“We always joke how he gets out of those innings,” Youkilis
said. “We wish he wouldn’t put himself in those jams, but it’s
amazing how he gets out of them.”
Asked how he does it, Matsuzaka just said, “I’m not really sure
myself . . . I’m not making any big mental changes when I get
runners in scoring position.”
Some times, the magic needn’t be explained.
Dice-K was an ace last night, and you never, ever question an ace.
