Amelie Mauresmo's singles status has been restored and she now appears intent on playing the Beijing Olympics. The International Tennis Federation announced Mauresmo has replaced Mary Pierce in the women's singles draw for Beijing. The Olympic tennis event will be staged Sunday, August 10 through Sunday, August 17 at the new Olympic Tennis Center in Beijing, China. The competition will include 64-player men’s and women’s singles draws and a 32-team draw in men’s and women’s doubles. A silver medalist at the Athens Olympics in 2004, Mauresmo announced on July 3 she would skip the Beijing Olympics after the French Tennis Federation failed to select her as a singles player. "Having not been selected in singles by the French Tennis Federation to attempt to bring a medal back for France and in the perspective of preserve herself physically because of an unsuitable schedule,I decided to withdraw from the Beijing Olympic games so that I can to commit myself to the last main objective of the year: the U.S. Open," Mauresmo said in a statement posted on her official web site. "I'll leave as soon as August 10 to play in two practice tournaments Cincinnati and New Haven. It is with a lot of sadness that I take this decision because playing for my country my last Olympic games meant a lot to me." However, those plans have been altered after Pierce, who was selected to the French squad despite the fact she has not played a WTA Tour match since Linz in October 2006, withdrew. Mauresmo's addition to the Olympic field means she will not be available for the Tier III Cincinnati event and leaves her status for the Tier II New Haven, which stars on August 17, in doubt. Kateryna Bondarenko has also been added to the women's singles field replacing Michaella Krajicek, who withdrew with an unspecified injury. Austria's Jurgen Melzer, who fell to Juan Martin del Potro in yesterday's Austrian Open final, has replaced Robin Haase in the men's singles field. Last week, Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pulled out of the Olympic singles and doubles as he continues rehab from knee surgery. Michael Llodra has replaced Tsonga in the singles field with Indianapolis champion Gilles Simon stepping in for Tsonga in the doubles. Tsonga's withdrawal came after 31-year-old Austrian Stefan Koubek withdrew due to a back injury.
