MILWAUKEE – We don't think Jason Kidd was giving a hint, but maybe he was.
After the Mavericks' disgusting display against Milwaukee, Kidd was asked if
this team was guilty of too many no-show performances like this, given the
amount of talent on hand.
"Yes," Kidd said, "and that's something that probably will be addressed here
shortly."
We think he meant in practice or skull sessions. But given the time of the
year and the way the Mavericks are struggling, it could be on the trade
front, too.
The Mavericks, as usual, are the default setting on all trade rumors. Those
flames will be fanned as the Mavs' record continues to hover too close to
.500 for the owner's taste.
But Mark Cuban put the squash on one piece of speculation before Wednesday's
game.
"We're not trading Josh [Howard] for Shawn Marion," he said, two days after
saying he has no intentions of trading Dirk Nowitzki. "And that's no
disrespect to Shawn Marion. He's a great player."
What the Mavericks have to hope for is that the economic climate in the next
month before the deadline coerces some teams into cost-cutting measures.
That's the way Detroit got Rasheed Wallace a few years ago and the way the
Lakers got Pau Gasol last season.
Patience, of course, is the key. And it gets tougher with every mounting
loss.
