A number of Dallas Mavericks fans are having a hard time connecting the dots
this season. We hear team owner Mark Cuban and head coach Rick Carlisle talk
about how deep the team is, how they can compete with the Los Angeles Lakers
in the Western Conference, and how Tyson Chandler and Brendan Haywood combine
to form the best front court tandem in the NBA. . .
Then the team takes the court and none of that talk seems to ring true. They
lose back-to-back home games to a non-playoff team (Memphis) that was missing
their All-Star starting power forward (Zach Randolph) and a huge conference
rival (Denver) that was missing their entire front court (Nene, Chris
Andersen, Kenyon Martin).
How do we make sense of the claims about how great this Dallas team can be in
light of their repeated ineffectiveness on the court? Actually, Carlisle
himself explained it pretty well as his team prepared to play the Boston
Celtics on Monday night.
"They've been a top defensive trade since the (Garnett) trade three or four
years ago," said Carlisle. "They're extremely efficient offensively, which
helps their defense. For us, I think it's key to be really efficient
offensively, really efficient with the ball. The turnovers really hurt. They
throw a wildcard into the mix and mess up your chances to be consistent
defensively. We've got to bring those down and I'm confident that we will.
That said, our game is a little different from their game. We need to get the
ball up and down the floor a little more than they do, and that starts with
getting stops on defense and then, when we kick it out we have to take care
of it."
This is something we hear and over from Carlisle, and while those of us who
spend most of our time watching and analyzing the game of basketball
understand it, casual fans may not.
There are two key issues here: turnovers and half court sets. When the
Mavericks commit turnovers, as they have been doing in wholesale club packs
this season, they create easy baskets for their opponents. When they force
turnovers, they create easy scoring opportunities for themselves. These two
simple concepts are true for every team in the league, but unlike the elite
teams, the Mavericks have a very hard time scoring when they aren't in a
transition situation.
If you watch Mavericks basketball you've seen this. When the Mavs are stopped
and forced to run a half court set, they give the ball to Dirk Nowitzki and
then stand around and wait for him to do some of that MVP stuff. They're a
little bit spoiled in this sense, because Nowitzki is one of the best players
on the planet. He is more than capable of creating something out of nothing.
He did it on three straight plays against the Celtics, helping the Mavericks
come up with a big come-from-behind win, but is that really a championship
formula?
Hardly.
The Mavericks are a deep team, with very talented players. Nowitzki, Jason
Terry, and Caron Butler are capable of putting up big numbers on the
offensive end and Jason Kidd can still facilitate with the best of them. But
when you slow the game down and force the Mavs into a half court set you can
beat them. Part of that is a personnel issue, but the coaches have to
shoulder their share of the blame. You have to be able to use your players
and gear your game plan towards their strengths.
Right now the Mavericks coach staff is struggling to do that, and that's why
Mavs fans are finding a disconnect between the rhetoric coming out of the
Mavs' front office and the results when the team takes the court.
Dirk
然後剩下四個人就開始發呆準備看Dirk表演
Dirk
