This time, Jason Williams' bout with knee tendinitis only cost him one game, as
the point guard was back in the starting lineup Sunday against the Trail
Blazers.
Williams, who missed seven games in a row earlier with the knee problem, is a
candidate to miss any game this season if the tendinitis flares up. Because of
that, Heat coach Pat Riley said he plans on significantly limiting Williams'
practices to help keep the knee from acting up.
''I don't think we can practice him at all in a way that's going too hard and
drilling and full-court, stop-go stuff,'' Riley said. ``I think we have to be
even more cautious.''
Riley said Williams' knee was not a concern when he traded for the point guard
this summer, and Williams said he didn't get held out of practices in Memphis
because of the tendinitis.
The lack of practice shouldn't hurt Williams' preparation, Riley said.
''He's pretty smart,'' Riley said. ``He absorbs everything.''
Should Williams still miss any more time, Riley said he will change how he
handles the position. Gerald Fitch had been playing behind starter Gary Payton
whenever Williams was out, but Riley said he would probably use more of Dwyane
Wade at point guard.
