Pat Riley has coached at least one player who amazed him more than Dwyane Wade (Magic Johnson). But after watching Wade for 2 1/2 seasons (including the past three months from the sideline), Riley can't think of another player he has coached with a superior package of skills. And that's saying something coming from a man who calls himself ''probably the most fortunate coach ever'' for having the luxury of coaching Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway and Shaquille O'Neal, among others. ''[Wade's] athleticism and quickness in combination with his overall skill level is probably the best package,'' Riley said, speaking of all the players he has coached. ``James Worthy would probably be the other guy. . . . [Johnson] doesn't come close to doing what Dwyane can do physically, athletically.'' After missing two games with a wrist injury, Wade continued to add to his legacy Wednesday with a 40-point masterpiece in a 118-112 win -- Miami's 10th consecutive victory overall and 15th in a row against Washington, including the playoffs. ''I needed a game like that scoring-wise,'' Wade said Thursday. ``I haven't had a big scoring game in a while like that.'' Wade has scored at least 40 points five times -- three in the regular season (a career-high 48 against Philadelphia last April and twice against Washington this year) and twice in last year's playoffs (Washington and Detroit). In February, Wade averaged 29.8 points -- the highest for any Heat player in any month in franchise history. He's averaging 32 points in two games this month and has topped 30 points on 26 occasions this season. Wade and Allen Iverson are the NBA's only players to rank in the top 10 in scoring, assists and steals. Wade ranks fifth in scoring (27.5), is tied for 10th in assists (6.8) and is eighth in steals (1.88). Wade's most remarkable play Wednesday was a behind-the-back, between the legs move that had fans buzzing. ''There were two big men right there, and that was the best way to split them,'' he said. ``I was just glad I got to the basket and nobody smacked the ball out of my hand.'' In September 2004, Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas said he doesn't think Wade ''can carry a team'' and said Wade ``proved that he couldn't shoot in the Olympics.'' his team again Wednesday, Arenas said he's amazed at how good he has become. But Arenas said Wade doesn't ''need'' to shoot jumpers. ``He's so quick and his change of direction is so, so fast that he's going to get to that rim no matter what. He has that floater, which usually a dunker doesn't have. I don't have it. ``And he's developed that, so he doesn't really need the shot I'm shooting. You could see in college he had explosiveness, and when you take that and bring that to the NBA, it's easier for him, because you don't have that zone [or] the trap.'' Wizards forward Caron Butler, who forged a friendship with Wade in the season they played together, credited Riley for allowing Wade to thrive. ''Over the years [with the Knicks and Heat], Riley has been more of a half-court guy and to see him kind of give the offense to Dwyane lets you know how special Dwyane is,'' Butler said. ``He's unbelievable, and the level he's playing at now is at an all-time high. He's 24. That's scary.'' -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 220.138.41.174
