Our first three guys are tied right now. It's going down to the wire. Also note that the players we ranked 5 and 6 could easily be 4 or higher on our list. It's extremely close. 1)(Tie) Steve Nash Phoenix Suns (51-26) PG 6-3 195 Stats: 19.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 10.4 apg, 51.3% FG Comments: No matter who comes and goes from the Suns, or who gets hurt, Nash sets everyone up. (Shawn Marion deserves credit, too.) Why he might not win MVP: Several other MVP candidates are more dominant on both ends of the floor. 1)(Tie) Dwyane Wade Miami Heat (51-27) SG 6-4 212 Stats: 27.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 6.8 apg, 1.92 spg Comments: A shorter Michael Jordan, who cannot be stopped. Why he might not win: Shaq's on his team. Wade's incredible whether Shaq is on the floor or not, but still. 1)(Tie) LeBron James Cleveland Cavaliers (47-30) SF 6-8 240 Stats: 31.7 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 6.7 apg, 1.58 spg Comments: An insanely ridiculous talent who is completely unguardable. Why he might not win: the Cavs aren't one of the league's best teams. 4) Dirk Nowitzki Dallas Mavericks (59-19) PF 7-0 245 Stats: 26.5 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.05 bpg Comments: Fantastic season on both ends of the floor. Why he might not win: LeBron and Wade are simply more awesome. 5) Elton Brand L.A. Clippers (44-33) PF 6-8 254 Stats: 24.8 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 2.7 apg, 2.57 bpg Comments: Incredible season from Mr. Brand, who also got 1.04 spg and shot 52.4% from the field. Why he might not win: The Clippers aren't one of the league's best teams. 6) Chauncey Billups Detroit Pistons (62-15) PG 6-3 202 Stats: 19.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 8.7 apg, 0.88 spg Comments: Billups has been terrific. Why he might not win: The Pistons are a total team effort with several players just as important as Billups is. 7) Tim Duncan San Antonio Spurs (60-18) F/C 6-11 260 Stats: 18.6 ppg, 11.1 rpg, 3.2 apg, 2.0 bpg Comments: A quiet season by Duncan's standards on the offensive end, but as a defender Duncan is a nightmare to deal with. Why he might not win: Not Duncan's best season. 8) Kobe Bryant Los Angeles Lakers (42-37) SG 6-6 220 Stats: 35.2 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 4.4 APG, 1.58 SPG, 44.4% FG Comments: Kobe had to do a lot this season and rose to the challenge.
