Sunday, April 23, 2006 MIAMI — You have to figure Heat center Alonzo Mourning wasn't happy sitting on the bench while his teammates played Game 1 of the playoffs Saturday against the Chicago Bulls. "I think it kills him," forward Udonis Haslem said. "Zo is a competitor. Anytime he has to sit out, whether it be a regular-season game or a playoff game, I think it bothers him." Mourning, who sustained a partially torn right calf muscle March 22 against Detroit, has been sidelined for the past month. Mourning, the NBA's third-leading shot-blocker at 2.66 per game, said his calf is almost healed but it tires easily and doesn't recover quickly. He said Saturday that he prefers to proceed cautiously. He won't say whether he'll play in Monday's Game 2 of this best-of-seven, first-round series. "I'm taking it day-by-day," he said. Part of the problem, he said, is he can't take the anti-inflammatory medication other players take. That's because of the kidney transplant he had in December 2004. "I'm sure if I could take some anti-inflammatories, I would feel a whole lot better out there right now, but I can't take any of that stuff, so I've got to be smart about this." Mourning said that turns out to be a good thing. "Anti-inflammatories kind of mask the pain," he said. "I have nothing masking the pain right now . . . which is a good thing, to tell you the truth, because I know my limitations. I know when to pull back because I don't have anything hiding it at all." Mourning, a leader on and off the court, is in many ways the Heat's heart and soul. Unlike center Shaquille O'Neal and guard Dwyane Wade, Mourning is candid and blunt in criticizing the Heat. And he sets the emotional tone for the team. "The thing he stresses more than anything is defense, and how everything starts with defense," Haslem said. "We could be up by 20 and he's still stressing defense. That's Zo." Anderson out: Swingman Derek Anderson was inactive Saturday because of a stomach virus, keeping the Heat one player short on its 12-man roster (two players short after Haslem's ejection). Mourning wasn't in uniform because of his calf injury.
