After what amounted to an abysmal season, the Miami HEAT entered the offseason looking to revamp a roster both hampered by injuries and lacking in great talent. Since the 2006-07 season, the 6-7, 215-pound Jones has played for six NBA teams and has a shot at making the HEAT, but he could be used as salary filler in a trade if the HEAT make a move in the next few days (his deal becomes guaranteed on August 15th and another team would get his non-guaranteed deal). His defense is solid as well, as the 6-8, 220-pound swingman uses his length well on that end of the court. Expected to come off the bench for either Shawn Marion or Michael Beasley, Jones can start if needed. What makes this signing very solid, though, is the interesting contract language – Jones is basically guaranteed for the first two years of the deal, worth just about $8 million, but the HEAT retained 2010 salary flexibility by negotiating the right to waive Jones. He'd get $2 million per year for the remaining three years of the deal if the team chooses to do that, but negotiating that kind of flexibility is great for a team that needs to keep Dwyane Wade at all costs. He can shoot the three-ball and isn't afraid to take big shots (see: 2008 NCAA Championship Game) , but his value will be in his defensive ability (long arms) and steadiness. Chalmers doesn't play out of his skill set and won't take unnecessary risks or turn the ball over. Beasley will be very similar to Kevin Durant in his first season in the NBA, able to score in a multitude of ways with a tremendous arsenal available to him on offense. He's a good rebounder and showed that along with his scoring in Summer League. With Dwyane Wade and (maybe) Shawn Marion to shoulder most of the load, Beasley is going to be able to step in and thrive as a sidekick. Mourning was still productive last season despite his age, but how good will he be after tearing his patellar tendon? Miami can match any offers another team puts on the table; Wright's offer is $2.4 million while Quinn and Powell are at the league minimum. The HEAT reportedly turned down a trade that could have brought in Tinsley for Haslem, possibly because Haslem is currently t he only player on the roster capable of really banging down low. On the free-agency front, the HEAT can look at Delonte West (restricted), Jannero Pargo, or Shaun Livingston, but the team really needs to look into trading either Haslem or Marion, as there's a legitimate logjam at the 3/4 position with James Jones, Michael Beasley, and possibly Powell and Wright behind Haslem and Marion. As constructed right now, Miami could sneak into the offseason in the Eastern Conference, but with some tweaking the HEAT could make an actual run.
