Rick Carlisle – Postgame Interview
I first want to congratulate Mark Daigneault, one of the great young coaches in
all of professional sports. And his team—the way this season started and everyt
hing—they may have had those buses painted up back in December. So, they’ll ha
ve a great parade. They have great fans.
This was a great series. I’m so proud of our players. So proud of our organizat
ion. Our fans showed up big time tonight. It was really moving.
What happened with Tyrese—just all of our hearts dropped. But he will be back.
I’m not… I don’t have any medical information about what may or may not have
happened, but he’ll be back in time, and I believe he’ll make a full recovery.
He authored one of the great individual playoff runs in the history of the NBA w
ith dramatic play after dramatic play. It was just something that no one’s ever
seen. And he did it as one of 17. That’s the beautiful thing about him—as gre
at a player as he is, it’s always a team thing.
Our hearts go out to him. But I’m so proud of everyone. So, questions.
Q: You mentioned Tyrese. We saw him greeting teammates on crutches, cheering fro
m the locker room. Did he say anything to the team at halftime?
Carlisle:
He was in the locker room and very much a part of a group that believed they cou
ld do this. Nembhard hit the shot at the end of the first half to give us a one-
point lead. Then we needed to come out and be better in the first five minutes o
f the third quarter. We just worn out, have the whole sequence in advance, but th
ey made some great plays. We got off to a slow start, and that quarter was the k
iller.
To me, the fourth quarter—and the effort our guys poured into it to win the qua
rter by one point—was epic. It was symbolic of what this team and Indiana baske
tball stand for. There was no surrender—just a defiant fight till the end.
I told these guys coming into this: there’s no feel-good scenario when you get
to the Finals and are unable to get it done. It really hurts. On the other hand,
this team gave all of Pacer Nation something to be very proud of.
)
Q: You touched a little bit about how much the team was able to fight in the fou
rth quarter. Specifically the first half, after seeing Tyrese go down. Your thou
ght how they are able to battle then, and on top of that, is there anything you
can share with us that what you say to the team after the game?
Carlisle:
I’m not going to share anything. Just… a tremendous amount of gratitude for th
eir character, skill, how together they were, how hard they continued to fight n
o matter what. You don’t author comebacks like this team did without an indomit
able competitive spirit to fight together. That’s what they were. That’s what
they did.
Q: Coach, Benedict Mathurin wasn’t able to play in the playoffs last year. What
did you think about how he helped keep you in the game during the fourth quarte
r and in this first playoff experience ?
Carlisle:
He’s a fighter. That’s one of the reasons he was the first guy in the game ton
ight. I knew we needed him. These are the kinds of moments he lives for as a com
petitor. He’s talked about it. I’ve seen it. This was one of those physical ga
mes where you needed pit bulls out there—figuring out ways to get to the basket
, draw fouls, get stops. I was really proud of how he fought from start to finis
h.
TJ McConnell – Postgame Interview
It was a tough, tough feeling to see your franchise guy go down like that. To ha
ve to move on and compartmentalize it—that’s tough. I thought we were fine. I
don’t even remember the score at halftime, but we were up one. I thought we did
a good job compartmentalizing. Obviously, we missed him. We’re all devastated
for him, and we support him.
Q: TJ, take us inside the locker room—what was it like after the game, knowing
the season’s over, you guys came so close after a special year?
McConnell:
No moral victories, obviously. We were deflated but proud of everything we accom
plished. There’s no award for second place. Everyone’s upset, but hats off to
OKC. They were the better team today.
Q: We saw Ty greeting you guys after the game. Can you share what it meant to se
e him still cheering you on?
McConnell:
That’s just who Ty is—to go down like that and still be selfless, cheering for
us even though he can’t play. That speaks volumes about who Tyrese Haliburton
is. One of the greatest human beings I’ve come across. Great teammate. We’re h
urting for him, but that’s just who he is.
Tyrese Hali
Q: TJ, you mentioned compartmentalization. That’s what precessional athletes do
, they compartmenlise all the time. I can’t imagine if it was easy or you were
even able to do that in this situation. Given the magnitude of both the game and
the injury.
McConnell:
When it happened, a lot of us were shaken up. Like you said, it’s part of the j
ob, but it’s hard to do when you see your guy goes down like that and you have
to move on immediately—especially that early in the game. At halftime, we all h
ugged him, told him we support him and that we’ll be there throughout his rehab
process.
Q: TJ, what you guys have been able to do in this season have inspired the entir
e city. What’s your message to the fans?
McConnell:
They’re absolutely incredible. Just want to apologize for coming up short. We w
ouldn’t be in this position without them. They willed us to a lot of wins. I’
s been an honor to play in front of them.
Q: TJ, I apologized if this was asked earlier, but the camera got the image of T
yrese outside the locker room greeting a bunch of you guys, you included. What d
oes it said that he stayed after the injury, even though he could have gone to t
he airport or hotel already. What does that say about him?
McConnell:
It doesn’t surprise me at all. That’s who he is, as a person, a teammate. He p
uts his ego aside constantly. He could’ve been in the locker room feeling sorry
for himself after something like that happened, but he wasn’t. He was up, gree
ting us, a lot of us were hurten from the loss, and he was up there, consoling u
s. That’s who Tyrese Haliburton is. He just the greatest man.
McConnell:
Q: What was it like trying to change how you gonna attack on the team on the fli
ght, when you guys have to deal with injuries mid-game, in the season and tryin
g to do that in game 7 against this team. What was the challenge like, what did
you think you did well and what was tough in that situation?
McConnell:
Up until their run, we were moving the ball and taking care of it. I didn’t tak
e care of it so well, obviously. Their pressure gets to you. I was trying to be
aggressive. I had some uncharacteristic turnovers, but that happens. I’m proud
of the fight. We fought to the end. Credit to OKC—they’re just really good.
McConnell:
Pascal Siakam – Postgame Interview
Yeah, it was tough. First of all, just wishing Ty well—hoping for the best. ’
m so proud of that kid. He went through so much this year—criticism, pressure,
stress—and he just kept battling, kept working every day. He did incredible thi
ngs during this playoff run. I’m super proud of him.
Obviously, it hurts. We couldn’t get it done. I wanted it so bad for him, becau
se he gave us everything he had. It just hurts that he couldn’t finish it with
us. But I’m incredibly proud of him and everything he’s accomplished. I know t
here’s more to come.
It’s just a tough situation, and we are all behind him. He was in the locker ro
om, talking to everyone. So selfless—going through a tough time but still looki
ng out for us, and still want to be there for us. It shows his character and who
he is as a player. That’s one of the biggest reasons I’m here. He made it sup
er fun for me to be here.
A couple of years ago, basketball felt dark for me. It was not fun at all. Then
I got traded here, and these guys gave me a boost. It started with Ty—playing w
ith him found my joy of the game again. Playing with swagger, happiness—that’s
all I want to do. I’d lost that for a while.
It’s so incredible that I came to a team like these guys, Chad, KP, Herb, Simo
n, the whole ownership crews, coaches, Rick. I didn’t think this was possible,
because the situation I was in, and just to see how amazing we did this year and
all the things we had accomplished
Of course, there’s no moral victory—we wanted to win. We felt like we did a lo
t to put ourselves in position to win. Obviously it sucks that we didn’t do tha
t. But I’m super proud of everyone. I know I am not even answering your questio
ns, but I really do love these guys. I’m super appreciative to have the opportu
nity to be here. They gave me my joy for the game again, and I am super grateful
for that.
Q: Do you realize how specialized it was to the state of Indiana and really to t
he whole NBA? I think you have a lot of folks onboard, being the underdog and be
ing able to get to this deep of the NBA finals.
Siakam:
Yeah, I think we did it the right way. That’s something I can proudly said. No
shortcuts. We’ve said all year—we’re not a sexy team, we are not a team that
everyone wants to watch. For a while, nobody cared about Indy. But we made peopl
e care. That’s something to be proud of. The fans were incredible all year. Jus
t to see how the city came alive, and we feel blessed to be the ones who gave th
em that.
I’m sorry, we wanted it for Indy—we want it more than anything, just for the c
ity, for the state, just because they deserve it. These people sleep, breathe ba
sketball. It was refreshing for me to be in that environment, to see how much ba
sketball means to these people. I’m super grateful. I hope people see we fought
hard, and we sorry we couldn’t get it done. We will continue to fight.
Q: Pascal, you touched a little bit on the fans. With such an incredible run, yo
u really inspired the whole city. What is your message to the fans after all thi
s?
Siakam:
Thank you so much to the fans. Some of those games—I have flashbacks to how ama
zing the crowd was. We couldn’t have done it without them. Every time when we w
ere out there, and the game felt like getting away, we kept battling because we
wanted to make Indiana proud. we want to make our fans proud. We tried our best.
At the end of the day, you win some, you lose some. We’ve got to be strong and
keep going. I told everyone—I love every single one of these guys. I wouldn’t
do it with anybody else. I’m so proud of this team. It’s hard to look forward
after you lose like this right now, but I’m super proud of my team, and I would
n’t go to battle with anyone else.
Q: The entire China is amazed by how you guys put together. Like you said, nobod
y watched the Pacers game, now suddenly all watches the Pacers. What does it mea
n to demonstrate great basketball not to just Indiana, but to the world?
Siakam:
That’s amazing. And it’s because of the way we did it—not the most popular wa
y. In the NBA, it’s all about stars. Team concepts get pushed aside. But we sho
wed you can win playing as a team, you can be a team and have the opportunity to
win. Obviously we didn’t do it, we didn’t finish it, no moral victories, but
we’re happy people can look at us and say, “Yeah, we like team basketball.” M
aybe we can set a trend going forward. And shoutout to China.
For a while, nobody cared about Indy.
But we made people care.
