What if ...? How the draft might have looke …

story?columnist=ford_chad&page=WhatIfMockDraft-060627
This year's draft is deep, with plenty of talent. But it could've been so
much more. Maybe even the strongest ever.
That's why so many GMs are playing the "what if" game the day before the
draft.
What if ... there were no age restriction and such elite high school players
as Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, Thaddeus Young, Brandan Wright and Spencer Hawes
had declared?
What if ... the Florida kids -- Joakim Noah, Al Horford and Corey Brewer --
decided to leave the Gators for the NBA after taking the national
championship?
What if ... top college players such as Josh McRoberts and Tyler Hansbrough
had decided to follow Tyrus Thomas' lead and be one and done?
Here's a hypothetical look at what might have been:
THE "WHAT IF?" DRAFT
PICK
TEAM
PLAYER
VITALS
Toronto
Greg Oden
Position: C
Height: 7-0
Weight: 245
Age: 18
School: Lawrence
(Ind.) North HS
What if? GM Bryan Colangelo is doing backflips in Toronto. The Raptors'
biggest need is at center and Oden is the best big man prospect to hit the
draft since Tim Duncan.
Chicago
(via New York)
Joakim Noah
Position: PF
Height: 6-11
Weight: 230
Age: 21
School: Florida
What if? Straight off of leading the Gators to a national championship, Noah
now gives the Bulls a center who has all the hustle and size of Tyson
Chandler, plus he isn't afraid of the ball on offense. Adding Noah clears the
way for Chicago to move Chandler this summer.
Charlotte
Kevin Durant
Position: SF
Height: 6-10
Weight: 190
Age: 19
School: Montrose
(Md.) Christian
What if? The Bobcats need a scorer and Durant has it all -- size, shooting
and a sweet jump shot with deep NBA range. He needs to get stronger, but for
once, the Bobcats score a potential superstar in the draft.
Portland
Adam Morrison
Position: SF
Height: 6-8
Weight: 205
Age: 21
School: Gonzaga
What if? This is the best scenario for the Blazers no matter how you slice
it. Blazers fans have felt alienated for years. Adding Morrison to the mix
gives them a local hero to cheer on and a guy on the floor who actually cares
about winning.
Atlanta
LaMarcus Aldridge
Position: PF
Height: 6-10
Weight: 240
Age: 20
School: Texas
What if? Since we're doing hypotheticals, we'll help Hawks GM Billy Knight
with a redo. The Hawks may be able to land Aldridge this year, even without
guys like Oden or Noah in the draft. Knight appears to be in love with
Shelden Williams, but given the team he's building, Aldridge is the perfect
fit.
Minnesota
Josh McRoberts
Position: PF
Height: 6-10
Weight: 230
Age: 19
School: Duke
What if? McRoberts is a versatile, athletic forward who can shoot and score
both inside and out. Should be a nice complement to Kevin Garnett on the
front line.
Boston
Andrea Bargnani
Position: PF
Height: 7-0
Weight: 225
Age: 20
Country: Italy
What if? Boston fans may scoff and say they already have Bargnani; his name
is Raef LaFrentz. But before you pass this pick off as a mistake, Bargnani is
quicker, more comfortable on the perimeter and doesn't have a bum knee.
Houston
Brandon Roy
Position: SG
Height: 6-5
Weight: 195
Age: 21
School: Washington
What if? The Rockets are praying for this result and will probably have to
move up in this year's draft to get it. Under this scenario, they don't have
to trade Luther Head to move up.
Golden State
Rudy Gay
Position: SF
Height: 6-9
Weight: 222
Age: 19
School: UConn
What if? The Warriors already have a soft, underachieving small forward: Mike
Dunleavy. However, at least Gay can play defense and his upside is phenomenal.
Seattle
Tyrus Thomas
Position: PF
Height: 6-9
Weight: 229
Age: 19
School: LSU
What if? In a normal year this is where a player like Thomas goes. He's
unproven, but the upside is beyond question. This takes the pressure off
Seattle to overpay Chris Wilcox. Thomas is more athletic and a better
defender.
Orlando
Thaddeus Young
Position: SF
Height: 6-8
Weight: 210
Age: 18
School: Mitchell
(Tenn.) HS
What if? Young is a long forward who has what Bill Simmons likes to call
"nuclear athleticism." He's almost impossible to stop in the open court. The
lefty is unusually quick for his size, meaning he can take his guy off the
dribble and guard just about everyone on the floor but centers. Orlando can
groom him as Grant Hill's replacement. Another young kid who's 15 to 20
pounds away from being a superstar.
New Orleans/
Oklahoma City
Al Horford
Position: SF
Height: 6-9
Weight: 235
Age: 20
School: Florida
What if? P.J. Brown isn't getting any younger and David West can't hold down
the fort by himself. Horford is tough, athletic and knows how to play. He'll
be a nice fit in New Orleans.
Philadelphia
Julian Wright
Position: PF
Height: 6-9
Weight: 220
Age: 19
School: Kansas
What if? The Sixers love long, versatile forwards, and Wright will be a great
fit. He can defend three positions, play a little point and rebound the ball
and then lead the break.
Utah
Randy Foye
Position: SG
Height: 6-4
Weight: 205
Age: 22
School: Villanova
What if? The Jazz have been looking for an athletic guard who can create his
own shot. Foye is the closest thing to Dwyane Wade the draft has.
NO/OC Hornets
(via Milwaukee)
Patrick O'Bryant
Position: C
Height: 7-0
Weight: 250
Age: 19
School: Bradley
What if? The Hornets need to find a center in the worst way. It's unusual, at
No. 15, to have so many options but O'Bryant has the most upside of anyone on
the board.
Chicago
Ronnie Brewer
Position: SG
Height: 6-7
Weight: 220
Age: 21
School: Arkansas
What if? This is a great scenario for the the Bulls. Brewer is long, athletic
and a great defender on the perimeter. His shot isn't pretty, but he knows
how to score. He should give the Bulls one of the most dynamic young
backcourts in the league.
Indiana
Cedric Simmons
Position: PF
Height: 6-9
Weight: 235
Age: 20
School: NC State
What if? Jermaine O'Neal's days in Indiana appear to be numbered. Simmons
probably won't ever be as effective on the offensive end, but defensively he
could be better.
Washington
Spencer Hawes
Position: C
Height: 6-11
Weight: 230
Age: 18
School: Seattle Prep
What if? A skilled center who knows how to play with his back to the basket.
Isn't the best athlete in the draft, but between his solid low-post moves and
his excellent passing ability out of the post, the Wizards finally have an
offensive weapon in the middle.
Sacramento
Jeff Green
Position: SF
Height: 6-8
Weight: 225
Age: 23
School: Georgetown
What if? Green has the skills to be the next Boris Diaw. He's long, athletic,
unselfish and really can handle the ball. He'll be a perfect fit in
Sacramento.
New York
(via Denver)
Brandan Wright
Position: PF
Height: 6-10
Weight: 210
Age: 18
School: Brentwood
(Tenn.) Academy
What if? On potential, Wright may be one of the best players in the draft.
He's a super-athletic big man who spends most of his time around the basket.
He's an excellent rebounder and shot blocker, runs the floor very well and
knows how to get to the rim. A steal for the Knicks here.
Phoenix
(via L.A. Lakers)
Yi Jianlian
Position: PF
Height: 7-0
Weight: 230
Age: 18
Country: China
What if? He's long, athletic and can score inside and out. That's how head
coach Mike D'Antoni likes them.
New Jersey
(via L.A. Clippers)
Shelden Williams
Position: PF
Height: 6-9
Weight: 250
Age: 22
School: Duke
What if? The Nets need a big, physical rebounder and defender who can step in
and play right away. Seems like Williams is the perfect fit here.
New Jersey
Marcus Williams
Position: PG
Height: 6-3
Weight: 205
Age: 20
School: UConn
What if? The Nets have been looking for a guy who can back up Jason Kidd and
Williams is the top point guard on the board. A few years backing up Kidd
could help him become a star, too.
Memphis
Mouhamed Saer Sene
Position: C
Height: 7-0
Weight: 232
Age: 20
Country: Senegal
What if? Jerry West has been craving a legit, athletic big man since he hit
Memphis. Here's his chance. Sene is raw, but when you watch him on tape he
looks eerily reminiscent of a young Dikembe Mutombo.
Cleveland
Ronald Steele
Position: PG
Height: 6-2
Weight: 185
Age: 21
School: Arkansas
What if? The Cavs need a starting point guard in the worst way and after
watching how Steele finished the season, he could be the guy. He's athletic,
can shoot the ball and really knows how to run a team. He could be the most
complete point guard in the draft.
L.A. Lakers
Corey Brewer
Position: SF
Height: 6-8
Weight: 185
Age: 20
School: Florida
What if? The Lakers love skilled swingmen who can pass, defend, shoot the 3
and get to the basket. Brewer did all of that for Florida in the Gators'
title run and should be able to step in and contribute right away.
Phoenix
Luc Richard Mbah a Moute
Position: SF
Height: 6-7
Weight: 215
Age: 19
School: UCLA
What if? The Suns already have an international team with an international
coach and Mbah a Moute just adds to the intrigue. Scouts compare him to Ron
Artest without the crazy. Adding another super-athletic physical defender
could be just the ticket to put the Suns over the top in the West.
Dallas
J.J. Redick
Position: SG
Height: 6-4
Weight: 190
Age: 21
School: Duke
What if? Back problems, legal problems … who cares at this point? College
basketball's player of the year can shoot as well as anyone in the league and
will be a welcome addition to Dallas' multi-pronged offensive attack.
New York
(via San Antonio)
Rajon Rondo
Position: PG
Height: 6-2
Weight: 171
Age: 20
School: Kentucky
What if? The Knicks have four different shooting guards who think they're
point guards. Here's their chance to get a real floor leader who thinks pass
first.
Portland
(via Detroit)
Roy Hibbert
Position: C
Height: 7-2
Weight: 283
Age: 19
School: Georgetown
What if? The Blazers are going to have to do something to replace Joel
Przybilla if he leaves via free agency, and Hibbert's got the size to be a
solid rebounder and shot blocker in the pros.
Other potential first-rounders: Tyler Hansbrough, Rodney Carney, Chase
Budinger, Gerald Henderson, Wayne Ellington, Javaris Crittenton, Thabo
Sefolosha, Hilton Armstrong, Olexsiy Pecherov, Kyle Lowry, Jordan Farmar,
Shannon Brown, Sergio Rodriguez, Alexander Johnson, Quincy Douby, Aaron Gray.
