The second round is a crapshoot for everyone, including prognosticators.
So take this as an indication of what teams might be thinking and who they
might have to choose from.
31. Portland Trail Blazers
Damir Markota
With their third pick in the draft, the Blazers grab an international kid
they can stash in Croatia a few years.
32. Houston Rockets
Daniel Gibson
Gibson was once considered a top-five prospect and could still have a Ben
Gordon-like impact on the game.
33. Atlanta Hawks
Yotam Halperin
Halperin would become Israel's first NBA player. The Hawks need a steady
point guard and Halperin's stellar play in the Euroleague indicates he could
come in and play some minutes immediately. Think a better-shooting Beno Udrih.
34. Los Angeles Clippers
Joel Freeland
Freeland could sneak into the first round with Phoenix or Portland, but it's
been the Clippers who have been following him since his grocery-bagging days
in England. A good pick for the future.
35. Toronto Raptors
Dee Brown
The Raptors need help at the point and Brown is one of the most experienced
point guards in the draft. He has incredible speed and plays with his heart
on his sleeve. But is he too small to be anything more than the next Earl
Boykins?
36. Minnesota Timberwolves
Leon Powe
The Timberwolves could use some nastiness in the paint and Powe has that in
abundance. He can be a devastating low-post scorer and rebounder when he's
healthy. The fact that he's had two ACL surgeries is the only reason he's not
a mid-first round pick.
37. Minnesota Timberwolves
Hassan Adams
While the Wolves are at it, adding a super athlete like Adams adds to the
team's overall toughness. Adams can guard three positions, which makes him a
great asset. If he ever learns to shoot, Trenton Hassell will be out of a job.
38. Golden State Warriors
P.J. Tucker
I don't know how excited to get about a 6-foot-4 power forward, but his
toughness is something the Warriors desperately lack.
39. Milwaukee Bucks
Will Blalock
He has all the tools to be a steal for Milwaukee. He's tough, fast and
athletic and he's a legit point. Adding Blalock should free them up to move
Mo Williams this summer.
40. Seattle SuperSonics
Josh Boone
Boone made a mistake by staying in the draft. Luckily, the Sonics love big
projects. Just ask Robert Swift and Johan Petro.
41. Orlando Magic
Mardy Collins
The Magic still need a big guard to put in the backcourt for defense, and
Collins is a steal here. His lack of athleticism hurt his individual
workouts, but the kid knows how to play.
42. Cleveland Cavaliers
Paul Davis
Davis could go much higher, but this is a great landing spot if it happens.
With Drew Gooden set to test free agency, the Cavs could use another big guy
who can rebound and stretch the defenses with an 18-foot jumper.
43. New Orleans/Okla. City Hornets
Marcus Vinicius Vieira de Souza
He's a hard one to figure out, but don't expect him to slide past here. The
Hornets have been in love with de Souza for a while and, in a few years,
could use his size and shooting ability.
44. Orlando Magic
James Augustine
The Magic add a utility forward who can rebound, block shots and step out and
hit the 18-foot jumper. He's going to be quietly effective as a role player
in the league.
45. Indiana Pacers
Paul Millsap
College basketball's best rebounder goes to a team that's looking to shore up
its toughness in the paint.
46. Utah Jazz
Mike Gansey
The Jazz don't get J.J. Redick, but they get the next best thing. Gansey can
shoot as well as Redick and may be a little more athletic. Somewhere Jeff
Hornacek is smiling.
47. Utah Jazz
Allan Ray
Another great pickup for the Jazz. Ray is an undersized two guard who can
shoot the lights out and slash to the basket.
48. Washington Wizards
Ryan Hollins
He's athletic and he can block shots. That's all the Wizards are looking for
this low in the draft.
49. Denver Nuggets
Steve Novak
Novak's dead-eye shooting will be a welcome addition to the Nuggets. Now, if
they could just find a two guard.
50. Charlotte Bobcats
David Noel
Look for the Bobcats to dial in the UNC connection again with the player
rated as the best athlete in the draft. He's probably more of a defensive guy
right now, but his skills are developing.
51. Los Angeles Lakers
Lior Eliyahu
Another player from Israel in the same draft. The Lakers will leave him over
in Israel and pray that he develops into the next Andrei Kirilenko.
52. Los Angeles Clippers
Vladimir Veremeenko
The Clippers continue to stash players overseas. Veremeenko has solid stats
in Russia, but he looks like a tweener in the pros.
53. Seattle SuperSonics
Renaldo Balkman
Balkman's energy, athleticism and defense could give the Sonics a new look.
54. New Jersey Nets
Kevin Pittsnogle
The big guy can really shoot the 3, which will be nice for the Nets. But will
he rebound or guard anyone?
55. Cleveland Cavaliers
Taj Gray
Gray has great energy and good athleticism. He's still raw, but he helps
fulfill a need if Drew Gooden goes.
56. Toronto Raptors
Denham Brown
GM Bryan Colangelo is contractually obligated to draft players from Canada.
Just kidding.
57. Minnesota Timberwolves
Kosta Perovic
Big guy got lots of love three years ago. Now, despite his improvement, no
one remembers his name. This is a great deal for Minnesota if they can get
him.
58. Dallas Mavericks
Louis Amundson
The Mavs will love his energy and athleticism. He's an Avery Johnson-type of
player.
59. San Antonio Spurs
Juan Jose Barea
He is super speedy, can score in bunches, and in Portsmouth, proved he could
run a team.
60. Detroit Pistons
Kenny Adeleke
The Pistons will look for a project that could eventually replace Big Ben
someday. Adeleke would be a good fit.
