Schalken, who celebrated his 27th birthday on September 8, now joins Andre Agassi as the only active players to have won a title in South America, North America, Asia, Australasia and Europe. （這也算意外的發現） The Dutchman, who also won the title in 's-Hertogenbosch earlier this year and reached the quarterfinals of the US Open, now has a 4-1 record against Schuettler. Schuettler was appearing in his second final of the year after the Australian Open final. The German, who currently stands in sixth position in the ATP Champions Race 2003, maintained his push for an automatic spot in Houston. During the presentation ceremony, Schalken announced to the Brazilian crowd that he is getting married to his fiance Ricky Pfennings, who watched the match from the stands. En route to the final, Schalken defeated Cyril Saulnier, Gregory Carraz, Vincent Spadea and Gaston Etlis (retired), while Schuettler recorded victories over Brazilian wild card Andre Sa, Paul Goldstein, Ramon Delgado and defending champion Gustavo Kuerten. "This was a great event with important players in the draw such as Guga, Schuettler, Gonzalez and others. "I knew how to play Rainer [Schuettler] since we play pretty similar. Patience was the secret. I knew I could not attack him and be aggressive since he is very fast and would always pass me. I was just more patient than him and that was the key to the match. The key for me during the week was to go through the first round. It was very hot that day and I did not play good. After I said, 'well a new tournament starts and I think I can make it.' "My next goal is to be in the Top 10 at the end of the ATP Champions Race. My year-end schedule is Moscow, Vienna, Tennis Masters Madrid, Stockholm and Tennis Masters Paris." Schuettler: "Sjeng [Schalken] was a better player today and I could not do anything. He was the best player of the week and I think he deserves the title. I was a bit slower today but Sjeng was just too good for me today. "I am happy to have played the final and keep my chances high for qualifying for the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston.
