June 8, 2004 Henin-Hardenne and Clijsters Forced to Withdraw from Wimbledon ST. PETERSBURG, Florida - Belgian stars Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters have withdrawn from Wimbledon due to injuries and illness, but expect to return to the WTA Tour later this summer. Henin-Hardenne withdrew from next week’s Ordina Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Wimbledon (June 21-July 4) due to cytomegalovirus, a virus that affects the immune system and causes severe fatigue. Henin-Hardenne was first diagnosed with the virus in April, forcing her out of competition for five weeks, until her return two weeks ago at Roland Garros. Doctors have advised Henin-Hardenne to rest for a few weeks to ensure a full recovery. "I am very disappointed not to be ready for competition," said Henin-Hardenne, ranked No. 1 in the world. "I will miss the grass court season more than anyone can imagine. Since the day I walked off the court after the semifinals at Wimbledon last year, I have been looking forward to competing on the grass again. Unfortunately, my dream of holding the Wimbledon trophy must wait another year. I look forward to an early and complete recovery and wish all my colleagues the best of luck." Clijsters has suffered from a left wrist injury since March. She is expected to undergo wrist surgery later this week to repair a torn tendon, and will likely be sidelined for several weeks. As a result, she has withdrawn from next week’s Hastings Direct International Championships in Eastbourne, Wimbledon and the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California (July 12-18) . "I am really going to miss playing Eastbourne and Stanford, and especially Wimbledon because it is a tournament everyone looks forward to playing because of the history, tradition and excitement," said Clijsters, ranked No. 2 in the world. “But my focus right now is on getting my wrist back to 100 percent, so I can get back on the court as soon as possible and be apart of all the exciting and competitive tennis that is taking place on the WTA Tour this summer." -- ---禪心已作沾泥絮,莫向春風舞鷓鴣--- -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.118.122.149
