Verkerk Claims First Grass Win, Hrbaty Loses
In the only singles match to go the distance during the first day of the
Ordina Open, No. 8 seed Fernando Verdasco got past qualifier Jean-Claude
Scherrer 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, saving three match points.
Dutchman Martin Verkerk defeated Belgian Kristol Vliefen 7-6 (2), 6-4 to pick
up the first win on grass of his career.
Four Dutch players were in action on the first day of the tournament, and they
posted a 3-1 record in their homeland. Joining Verkerk with victories were
Dennis van Scheppingen (def. Jose Acasuso 6-3, 6-2) and John van Lottum
(def. Thierry Ascione 6-2, 6-0). Wild card Peter Wessels suffered the only
defeat, falling 6-1, 6-3 to Igor Andreev.
Jan Vacek recorded the only upset of a seeded player, knocking out No. 5 seed
Dominik Hrbaty 6-4, 6-4.
No. 6 seed Mikhail Youzhny was the only other seeded player in action. He
defeated Antony Dupuis 6-4, 6-0.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
van Lottum: "I'm happy for sure, I didn't play too many matches lately because
of my [back] injury but it's always nice to win in front of your home crowd
and my back is fine and that is the most important thing."
"I really like the grass, I've always had good results on the grass and I'm
looking forward to my second round. It's Verdasco or Scherrer, these are
players that are beatable. I'm also looking forward to Wimbledon, which is my
favorite tournament."
van Scheppingen: "I played a really good match, not perfect because I played
club matches in Holland on hard court so it was a big difference to play on
grass today. I'm pretty satisfied."
"It's going to be a tough match between Karlovic or Clement, I wonder who is
going to win. It's going to be a tough match for sure."
Verkerk: "I tried to concentrate and to win my first grass court match and it
worked. I think it makes me a 50 percent better grass court player because
I'm mentally good on it. It's still not my favorite surface but if you win a
match you like it more, so I'm really happy with this match and I think it
will help me a lot to think positive about the grass."
"It's always great to win in Holland, that is what you want to do. You want
to win in Davis Cup for your country and you want to win Dutch tournaments."
"The next match will be tough playing Youzhny. He's a good grass court player
so we will see what happens."
