重點：胖子Peter Abraham的一些內幕 1. 洋基跟第一輪選中的六呎十吋的長人Andrew Brackman簽了四年大聯盟合約，他最少可以拿到四百五十萬美元，最多則可以拿到一千三百萬美元，多出的獎金則是依照他的表現支付, 三百三十萬的簽約金則是洋基隊簽約史上給得最高的。(所以選對經紀人真的差太多了，Scott Boras果真是嚇人)。現金人在90分鐘後證實了這件事，他說因為洋基認為Brackman有極高的上限(天賦)。Brackman被放到GCL yankees隊及40人名單，曾上來大聯盟湊人數兼觀光的Chris Basak則被DFA以便讓出一個空位。 2. 洋基還簽了五位其他的選手，包括捕手Austin Romine(第二輪)、三壘手Brad Suttle( 第四輪)、捕手Richard Weems(第六輪)、外野手Taylor Grote(第八輪)、及游擊手 Carmen Angelini(第十輪)。洋基在每個簽約選手花的錢,都超出了大聯盟理事長辦公室建議各隊簽約所花的金額。 3. 除了Brackman以外, Suttle也是史上第四輪簽約給得最多的, 他拿到了一百三十萬美元。更不用說第十輪的Angelini, 洋基用一百萬讓他打消了接受Dice大學提供的棒球獎學金。 4. But the Yankees still thought enough of the 6-foot-10 North Carolina State right-hander to sign him to a four-year major-league contract worth a minimum of $4.5 million. Teams faced a deadline of midnight last night to sign players selected in the June draft. Brackman's contract could be worth as much as $13 million. The Yankees have a series of team options while Brackman can earn bonuses based on performance. His $3.3 million signing bonus is the most the team has ever given a draft pick. General manager Brian Cashman confirmed the deal 90 minutes before the deadline. "Obviously we think he has tremendous upside," Cashman said. Brackman was assigned to the Gulf Coast League Yankees and placed on the 40-man roster. Infielder Chris Basak was designated for assignment to make room. The Yankees signed five other picks yesterday: catcher Austin Romine (second round), third baseman Brad Suttle (fourth round), catcher Richard Weems (sixth round), outfielder Taylor Grote (eighth round) and shortstop Carmen Angelini (10th round). In each case, the Yankees exceeded the amount of money suggested by the commissioner's office, which is trying to control spending on the draft. Suttle, a junior at Texas, received $1.3 million. That's the most ever for a fourth-round pick. Angelini was given $1 million to break a commitment to attend Rice. Sheff returns: The Tigers arrive at Yankee Stadium today for the first time this season. They bring with them Gary Sheffield, whom the Yankees traded to Detroit in November. Sheffield has since claimed he accepted the trade to prove a point to the Yankees. He later accused Joe Torre of treating him differently because he was black. "At the end I won, as far as I'm concerned. I was hurt all year and I had to prove to myself, and to most people that's what I did," Sheffield said yesterday. Sheffield believes he will be warmly received. "Everywhere I go in New York, I know what kind of appreciation I get," he said. "They haven't forgotten what I've done." Sheffield went into last night's game against Cleveland hitting .284 with 24 homers and 71 RBI. Bullpen renovation: Right-hander Edwar Ramirez and left-hander Sean Henn were called from Triple-A Scranton. Right-handers Jim Brower and Jeff Karstens were optioned out. Henn pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in yesterday's 6-3 loss. Ramirez allowed one hit and struck out three in 2 1/3 scoreless innings. The thin right-hander had better command of his fastball, a weakness he showed when he was with the team last month. Karstens had a 9.64 ERA in three appearances since coming off the disabled list on Aug. 2. Brower allowed seven runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings in a nine-day stint. Payback time: Baltimore starter Erik Bedard hit Derek Jeter in the left leg with a fastball in the first inning. It was no coincidence that Ron Villone hit Nick Markakis with a pitch in the back on Tuesday night. Jeter later twisted his right ankle when he stumbled over a broken bat while playing shortstop in the fifth inning. He said, of course, that he felt fine. Extra bases: The Yankees are 4-8 against the Orioles, losing all four series so far. The Yankees are 2-4 against Baltimore since July 2, 26-8 against other teams. ...
