Baseball beat: Posada might bolt Yankees after season
In focus, by Peter Abraham
Paul Lo Duca,
(19 homers, 93 RBI and 86 runs scored over 151 games)
Could Jorge Posada be playing for another team next season? It was a question
that made Derek Jeter laugh out loud.
"No chance," he said. "He'll be back. Write that down."
We did. Then, when the same question was put to Posada, he wasn't nearly as
confident.
"I wish I could say for sure I'll be with the Yankees next season," he said.
"But I don't know that. A part of me is interested in being a free agent
because I never have been one before."
The six-year, $63 million deal Posada signed before the 2002 season will run
out this year, and it proved to be a bargain. No catcher has had more home
runs, RBI or runs scored in that time.
"We know everything we need to know about Jorge, and we want him back,"
general manager Brian Cashman said. "We know about his ability, his
leadership and his toughness. The only thing we need to know is price."
That will be determined by demand. With the Mets anxious to be rid of the
irritating and unproductive Paul Lo Duca, Posada could pit the two New York
teams against each other if he goes onto the market. His agents, Sam and Seth
Levinson, would savor such a scenario.
The Brooklyn-based brothers have good working relationships with both teams,
particularly the Mets. Other than Pudge Rodriguez and Michael Barrett, Posada
is the only starting catcher who could become a free agent this winter.
There is a significant obstacle, however. Posada turned 36 on Friday. He is
past the age when catchers traditionally start a rapid decline.
"That's a factor you have to weigh," Cashman said.
But Posada is proving that, in his case, age is not a hurdle. He is on a pace
that would give him 19 homers, 93 RBI and 86 runs scored over 151 games. Only
six catchers in baseball history have been as durable and productive.
Johnny Bench, Yogi Berra and Mike Piazza equaled or bettered those statistics
twice during their careers. Gary Carter, Carlton Fisk and Darrell Porter did
it once.
But none did it past the age of 29. That Posada is so productive into his
mid-30s is unprecedented.
Only one full-time catcher has driven in 90 runs past the age of 35. That was
Fisk, who drove in 107 runs for the White Sox at the age of 37.
Fisk was a physical freak who caught regularly until he was 43 and retired at
45. Posada has no intention of playing that long. But he believes he can be
productive for at least another two or three seasons.
"I'm finding ways to stay healthy and stay young," he said. "I'm getting
better every year as a catcher and a hitter. What you might lose physically
you make up for with wisdom. I take care of myself better now."
Posada also believes he will have more longevity because of his history. He
didn't start catching until 1992, when he was 21. He also played sparingly as
a backup to Joe Girardi in 1997.
"I haven't really been catching a long time," he said. "It's all relative,
but I'm not worn down by the position like some guys."
Manager Joe Torre said Posada matured late in his career, learning to control
his emotions. That has translated to better results on the field.
"He still has that fire, but it works for him," Torre said. "It used to work
against him at times in the past. He's as good now as he ever was - better in
a lot of ways.
"It's hard to think of what we would do without him. But that's for other
people to settle, not me."
Posada admitted he was irritated in spring training when the Yankees decided
not to discuss a contract extension. Cashman will wait until after the season
to talk about an extension with Posada, Mariano Rivera and possibly Alex
Rodriguez.
"I put it out of my mind in March," Posada said. "I know we're going to talk
after the season, and hopefully something gets done. But it's not a
guarantee. I have to sit down with my agents and look at every scenario."
Even the Mets?
"Even the Mets," Posada said. "I've never really pictured myself playing for
another team, but I have to do what's right for my family. I just want to
hear what the Yankees say first, and then we'll make some decisions."
