Bonderman strikes out again as Tigers lose

1. Jeremy Bonderman

Damon
DETROIT -- Jeremy Bonderman bumped into the same wall he's not gotten past
for a month.
He gave up runs in the first inning again. He lost again. He left people
wondering what's wrong again.
Plus this time, for the first time since he was a rookie in 2003, Bonderman
didn't strike anyone out.
The Tigers evened their Saturday record at 1-1 with a 7-2 loss to the Yankees
in a game that actually began on time. Three minutes off, with a 7:08 p.m.
first pitch, but who's quibbling?
Three minutes compared to the 241 by which Friday night's game was delayed --
the other difference being that the Tigers won that game 9-6 on Carlos
Guillen's three-run home run at 3:30 a.m.
This one was over more than an hour before Friday's game began. Actually this
one was over by the sixth inning for the simple fact that Chien-Ming Wang
(15-6) pitched well and Bonderman, now 10-7, didn't.
The Tigers starter retired the first two batters he faced, but still managed
to give up two first-inning runs, his trademark trouble. Melky Cabrera's
bases-loaded triple in the sixth, however, put it away.
In New York last week when the Tigers faced Wang, and lost to him despite
hitting better than they did in this game, manager Jim Leyland called him "a
heck of a pitcher who didn't have a heck of a day."
This time, though, he was much better.
"He went back to that power sinker-fastball," Leyland said. "He was sharp.
Over there, he went with more off-speed stuff."
This slump of Bonderman's, though, is more than a problem -- it's a
full-blown mystery.
On July 13, after beating Seattle, Bonderman was 10-1 with a 3.50 ERA. In his
last seven starts, six of which he's lost, Bonderman has allowed 40 earned
runs in 41 innings for an 8.78 ERA.
"It's very puzzling," Leyland said. "If I had some answers, I'd share them
with everybody, most importantly with him. We've been trying to figure it
out, but we can't."
Neither can he.
"It's on me," Bonderman said. "I have to pitch better. The biggest thing is
that I'm pitching up without a lot of movement. It's definitely frustrating
-- one of the most frustrating things I've gone through."
The Yankees, meanwhile, were happy not to lose twice in the same day.
"Everybody understood how important this game was after last night's loss,"
said manager Joe Torre, who held a brief team meeting before the game. "If
we'd gone out looking lethargic, I'd have kicked myself. I wanted to make
sure we went after it."
If nothing else, this game was a microcosm of the point Leyland made earlier
this week.
"The key to the whole thing is starting pitching," he said. "It's that simple.
"People get confused between what's realistic and criticism. I'm not
criticizing anybody. I love my pitchers. I love my players, But the fact of
the matter is that the starting pitching has not been good
"If it doesn't get better, we're not going to win. You can take that to the
bank. That's not criticism, that's fact. I'd never criticize my players, but
I'm also not going to be an excuse-maker.
"The starting pitching has to do better. You need guys to step up. If these
guys can't handle that, then maybe long after I'm gone, at some point they'll
understand what I'm talking about.
"This is the big boys game," Leyland said. "We're in a pennant race, we have
a heck of a chance. I'm excited, but I'm not going to sit here and lose
credibility by telling the media something when they know you're lying
through your teeth.
"We're in good shape, but we have to go do it. If we get starting pitching
like we've had for a period of time, it ain't going to work.
"And you know what? If the other teams get bad starting pitching, it ain't
going to work for them, either."

No K's not OK: Bonderman strikes out none in loss to Yankees

In his start against the Yankees on Saturday night, Tigers right-hander
Jeremy Bonderman didn't strike out anyone. It was the first time since his
rookie season that he didn't get a strikeout in a start.
Asked about his pitcher's lack of whiffs, manager Jim Leyland said, "They've
got a lot of left-handed hitters, which makes it a little more difficult."
New York had seven left-handed hitters in the lineup; the only right-handed
ones were Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. And after Johnny Damon swung and
missed at Bonderman's third pitch of the game, none of those seven
left-handed hitters swung and missed at a Bonderman pitch the rest of the
night.
Those left-handed hitters made plenty of decisive contact.
Hideki Matsui lined a two-run double to continue what Leyland calls
Bonderman's "very puzzling" first-inning trouble. Damon hit a homer to
right-center in the third. Then, with the Tigers within a run, Melky Cabrera
drilled a bases-loaded triple in the sixth, and then Damon tripled home
Cabrera.
That wrapped up the scoring in the Yankees' 7-2 win. The game drew the
second-largest paid crowd in Comerica Park history: 44,250, which is 47 fewer
than the Opening Day throng this season. The Tigers fell 2 1/2 games behind
first-place Cleveland in the AL Central.
This was Bonderman's eighth straight winless start. It's an illusion that
he's contributed nothing to the Tigers lately. In each of his two starts
before Saturday, he had made a quality start (six innings or more, three
earned runs or fewer).
But this was the fourth time in his last six starts he gave up at least six
earned runs. And then there was the lack of strikeouts, from the man who had
the most strikeouts of any American League right-hander last season.
"When you've got left-handed hitters, in most cases it's pretty important
that you've got something that changes speeds," Leyland said, continuing to
discuss why Bonderman didn't fan anyone Saturday. "In most cases, Bondo
throws everything hard, and at some points, the change-up is a little bit too
hard.
"It's not a lot of times the pitch, it's the speed of the pitch that gets the
hitters.
"A lot of pitchers are capable of throwing a change-up when they're behind in
the count 2-1. Bondo shows that from time to time, but obviously not
consistently enough. You can see the hitters charge him."
Bonderman said: "I've got to find a way to pitch well for the rest of the
year and give us a chance."
For the second time in a week, Bonderman lost to right-hander Chien-Ming
Wang. When it happened last Sunday, Leyland said the Tigers let Wang escape
on a day when he was struggling.
The only similarity between Wang last Sunday and on this night was that he
wild-pitched home a run in the fifth inning. Wang went eight innings in this
one and allowed only five hits.
The Tigers were behind all the way after Bonderman's first-inning ERA rose to
12.24. But he was speaking of all his innings over the last several weeks
when he said, "This is definitely the most frustrating thing I've gone
through."
