The last pitcher to get to 50 wins that quickly was Dwight Gooden, who reached No. 50 in 82 starts. That came in 1986 The last Yankee to do that was Ron Guidry, who won his 50th in 82 starts in 1979. Wang had no idea about the milestone until I mentioned it to him. “Dwight Gooden?” he said. “Who’s that?” “He pitched for the Mets,” I said. “You mean Doc Gooden,” he said. “Same guy?” Joba Chamberlain, who was listening to our conversation, was laughing hysterically. All kidding aside, Wang took a step forward tonight in that he pitched six innings and won a game without his best stuff. His sinker was up and his slider was flat. He won by throwing splits and changeups. As Joe Girardi said, that’s what great pitchers do. http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2008/04/23/wrapping-it-up-from-chicago/ From New York Times beat blog: Wang Wins No. 50; Johnny Talks Joba By Tyler Kepner Chien-Ming Wang earned his 50th career victory on Tuesday in Chicago. It was his 85th career start. The last pitcher to win 50 in so few starts was Dwight Gooden, who reached the milestone in his 82nd start back in 1986. When we spoke with Wang after the game, I asked if he had ever heard of Dwight Gooden. He shook his head and said no. Joba Chamberlain, leaning in from his locker, howled. As the interview broke up, we mentioned Gooden again, and someone referred to him as “Doc.” Wang’s face lit up in recognition. Doc Gooden, now that’s name he knew. “He does know!!” Chamberlain cried to the reporters who had left. “Edit! Edit! You need me to translate?” http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/23/wang-wins-no-50-johnny-talks-joba/ From MLB.com's blog Wang in the Win-dy city There was a funny moment last night in the Yankees clubhouse, when Chien-Ming Wang was conducting his postgame interview session with reporters. Wang is lockering next to Joba Chamberlain here in Chicago, and Chamberlain literally climbed inside his locker while Wang spoke, staring over Wang's shoulder, making faces and doing almost anything he could to try and distract Wang. It didn't work and Wang got through his interview fine. Later, the conversation turned to how Wang is now the quickest pitcher to reach 50 career wins since Dwight Gooden did it with the Mets. Wang said he didn't know who Gooden was, listening attentively as someone recounted Gooden's early days with the Mets and later his no-hitter for the Yankees. Then, someone dropped the name 'Doc Gooden.' Now, that guy, Wang knew. "He does know!" Chamberlain yelled, calling back all of the reporters who had left the conversation. http://bombersbeat.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/04/windy_city.html -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.109.23.119 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.109.23.119
