Bobby Abreu delivered the go-ahead single in the top of the 12th inning,
lifting the Yankees to a 7-6 victory over the Twins on Saturday at the
Metrodome, posting their first extra-innings win of the season.
With Minnesota right-hander Juan Rincon in his second inning of work, Johnny
Damon stroked a one-out hit and moved to third base on a Derek Jeter single.
Abreu followed with an RBI single up the middle to drive home the game's first
run since the seventh inning.
"Bobby is a professional hitter, and he's been great for us all year,"
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He knows that all he needs is a sac fly,
and he worked the middle of the field, which is where you want him to go.
It's just a real good at-bat."
"I [didn't] try to do too much, really," Abreu said. "I'm just looking for
any pitch around the plate, something that I can drive very well. I'm just
trying to hit the ball up the middle."
Closer Mariano Rivera retired the side in the bottom of the 12th, recording
his 15th save in 15 opportunities and putting the Yankees one game over .500
at 28-27, the first time they have had a winning record since May 4.
"I knew in my heart we were a much better club than what we were playing,"
Girardi said. "We weren't playing well, and when you have the talent level we
have, you should play better. That's exactly what we're doing."
But they could not have gotten there without a sterling effort by the club's
bullpen, which limited Minnesota to one run over the final 6 2/3 innings
after struggling right-hander Chien-Ming Wang gave up five runs over 5 1/3.
New York's bullpen performance included two scoreless frames from rookie Ross
Ohlendorf, who notched his first Major League win by escaping trouble in the
10th and 11th innings, putting his own recent troubles behind him. He had
allowed nine earned runs in his previous three outings, spanning six innings.
"It's huge for confidence, I think," Rivera said. "It hurts when you see a
guy like that going through that, because he has great stuff. Today, he had
great stuff and he showed it."
Ohlendorf relieved after Kyle Farnsworth's scoreless ninth inning, sending
the game into extras. Ohlendorf got the first two outs, but Mike Lamb got a
hold of a fastball and sent a booming drive toward right field. Ohlendorf
initially believed the ball was gone for a walk-off home run before backing
up third base, and so did Girardi, who was watching from the dugout.
Looking up in right field, Abreu said he at least held out hope. The drive
hit the very top of the baggy and dropped to the playing field as Lamb raced
to third with a triple. An intentional walk to Nick Punto followed before
Ohlendorf won a battle with Carlos Gomez, striking out the center fielder
swinging. Gomez snapped his bat over his right thigh, a la Bo Jackson, and
the Yankees remained alive.
"Good thing it hit the wall," Abreu said. "It was scary."
There was also trouble in the 11th, one inning after Alex Rodriguez had
walked and stole second, but he was picked off to short circuit a Yankees
rally. Alexi Casilla opened with a single, and Joe Mauer followed with a
walk, but Ohlendorf trusted his slider and got two flyouts and a strikeout,
setting the stage for Abreu's heroics and -- accordingly -- Ohlendorf's first
win.
"It feels good," Ohlendorf said. "It's certainly a memorable night."
Wang started for New York and gave up runs in each of the first three
innings, allowing an RBI single to Justin Morneau in the first and a Punto
sacrifice fly in the second. Spotted a one-run lead, Wang gave it right back
in the third by issuing a leadoff walk to Casilla, who'd come around to score
on Michael Cuddyer's single up the middle.
Wang ran into more bumpy ground in the sixth, allowing a leadoff hit to
Delmon Young and a one-out single to Punto before the Twins executed a
successful double steal. Gomez fisted a bloop in front of Abreu in right
field that brought home the Twins' fourth run, chasing Wang in favor of
reliever Edwar Ramirez.
Casilla brought in Minnesota's fifth run with a fielder's choice when Jason
Giambi opted to try for a double play instead of throwing home. In the
seventh, Cuddyer touched Ramirez for his first run allowed all season,
crushing a 361-foot home run to left, tying the game at 6 and costing Wang
his chance at a seventh victory.
Later, Wang would admit to being "a little bit" worried about his recent
trend of underwhelming performances. After starting the year 6-0, he has now
allowed five or more earned runs in each of his past three starts.
"He was just off," Girardi said. "He had a hard time repeating his delivery,
but he kept us in the game. That's the thing he does. When he's off, it's not
like he gives up 10 or 12 runs. He still keeps you in the game."
The Yankees scored three times in the third inning off Twins starter Boof
Bonser, all unearned. Damon walked and advanced to second when Punto booted a
routine Jeter grounder, and Abreu came through with an RBI double. Rodriguez
tied the game with a hot line drive that sailed over a leaping Punto to left,
scoring two runs.
Bonser left a two-on,none-out jam for Jesse Crain in the sixth after issuing a leadoff walk to
Hideki Matsui and a single to Giambi. Crain got the first out before Jose
Molina delivered an RBI double to right. Melky Cabrera lifted a sacrifice fly
to left, scoring New York's fifth run and closing the book on Bonser.Damon
capped an inning with an RBI single off Crain.
"This is a club that can put pressure on teams."Girardi said.
