[新聞] Cabrera experiencing growing pains
NEW YORK -- When Yankees center fielder Melky Cabrera belted five home runs
during the first month of the 2008 season, manager Joe Girardi didn't expect
him to produce 36 homers throughout the season.
Girardi says he never makes too much of the first month.
But as Cabrera's batting average has fallen from .299 in March and April to
.251 heading into August, that first month remains the high point that he has
struggled to replicate.
"You're hoping that he could continue on that pace," Girardi said. "I
actually think he's hit the ball harder than his average indicates, so I've
been happy with Melky."
Cabrera went 3-for-4 with a triple against the Angels on Thursday, marking
his first three-hit game since June 7, and he followed it up with an 0-for-3
performance Friday. While Jason Giambi and Robinson Cano have gone on streaks
to bounce back from early-season hitting lulls, Cabrera hasn't regained a
consistent offensive rhythm.
But Girardi said Cabrera has been hitting the ball well, and he believes some
of it is just bad luck.
"I think you could look at Melky, and Melky's probably had as many hard balls
caught as anyone on our club. It's just one of those years," Girardi said.
"Would you like to have him hitting .360? Yeah, absolutely, but sometimes
that just doesn't happen."
And it's not as though the Bombers are without power hitters. With the
acquisition of Richie Sexson and Ivan Rodriguez, the Yankees roster became
the first Major League club to hold seven players with at least 200 big
league home runs. Cabrera's numbers sit below those of a majority of his
teammates, but Girardi said he feels people overlook that he is only 23 years
old.
"This is still a kid, and there's going to be some ups and downs like with
all players," Girardi said. "Melky has been pretty good. I think he's
improved defensively for us."
Cabrera showed off his glove skills Friday night when he crashed against the
outfield wall to snag a deep fly ball from the Angels' Garret Anderson and
rob him of a hit.
While Girardi has rotated other members of the Yankees lineup to give them
days off or time at the designated hitter position for rest, Cabrera has been
a constant in center field. And Girardi is confident that Cabrera can raise
his success at the plate to match his performance in the field.
"Melky still has a lot of time to have a really good season," Girardi said.
"And the one thing about Melky is he's there every day for us, and the effort
is there every day."
