[農場] The TRULY significant unsigned draft …

I’ve had several readers link me to a column that attempts to inform
Yankees fans about the draft and who the important signability cases that
remained were.
Well, in an effort to clear up some of the confusion that said column has
caused, here is a real list of the significant remaining unsigned draftpicks.
1st round pick, Gerrit Cole (RHP) - Cole is as much of a lock as a Boras
client can be. There’s no way he’s not signing.
Supplemental pick, Jeremy Bleich (LHP) - Another one that the Yankees like
and are going to have to go overslot to get simply because they’re dealing
with Boras. He’s pretty much a lock, too.
2nd round pick, Scott Bittle (RHP) - In my interview with Damon Oppenheimer,
he says that the window is still open a crack on this one. The flip side of
this is that the window is also within a crack of closing at this point. If
they truly don’t like what they see in his shoulder, this isn’t getting
done and the Yankees will be happy to have another 2nd round pick next year
after an offseason that includes several enticing free agents who will cost
the team their 1st rounder.
26th round pick, Blake Monar (LHP) - His velocity was really down in his last
start, but he was coming off being sick and throwing only two-seamers. At
the same time, Mr. Oppenheimer made it very clear in our conversation that
they spent the entire summer building as complete a picture as possible on
him. The chances have gone down on this one, but we can still hold out hope
for the lefty with the will to dominate. I spoke to Blake today and he said
he hasn’t heard anything since he returned from the CMWS.
27th round pick, Garrison Lassiter (SS) - This one has become a pretty solid
one to bet on. From being down in Tampa with Jeter in Spring Training, to
his father saying the Yankees knew what he wanted prior to the selection and
saying they were ok with it, you have to think this is already done and the
official announcement is coming any moment now.
30th round pick, Ben McMahan (C) - Like his 7th round counterpart, Kyle
Higashioka, McMahan is a defensive whiz with a projectable bat. In our
conversation, Mr. Oppenheimer told me that while it was probable that he
would end up a Gator, negotiations were still ongoing. This would be one of
those last minute signings that would be a great surprise.
36th round pick, Chris Dwyer (LHP) - Another draftee that Mr. Oppenheimer’s
conversation helped clear up, Dwyer sustained a broken leg this summer and
has been unable to prove himself through pitching in the Intercity League up
in Massachussetts. However, I was told that negotiations were still ongoing
in this case. This is another signing that would be a great surprise on the
15th.
37th round pick, Justin Harper (RHP) - Having a build like a bear, the big
righty has a great ceiling due to his electric stuff. He’s got a lot of work
to do to reach that potential, but in my conversations with him, he’s ready
and willing to do what it takes to get there. He’ll be a great prospect to
follow next year if he comes to terms with the Yanks.
43rd round pick, Matt Summers (RHP) - A great athlete, Summers is committed
to play for Coach Mike Gillespie of UC-Irvine next year. If you’ll recall,
Gillespie coached not only Ian Kennedy at USC, but he also was recently the
manager of the Staten Island Yankees. While I thought there was no chance at
this one, Mr. Oppenheimer said that it was a longshot, but confirmed that
negotiations weren’t totally dead as of yet.
So, I’d count on Cole, Bleich, Lassiter and Harper to eventually get
announced.
Monar and Bittle (especially Monar) would be nice, but the team isn’t as
high on them as they once were.
Dwyer, McMahan, and Summers are longshots and would be amazing surprises for
us fans.
As far as the information I’ve gathered goes, Andy Suiter, Sam Mende, Creede
Simpson, Matt Veltmann, Luke Anders, and Rob Scahill are all going to be
going back to school, and thus aren’t worth mentioning on any list of
significant unsigned picks.
We are all still crossing our fingers that the Yanks take a flier on 41st
rounder, defensive whiz in CF, and ladies man, Mykal Stokes.
I hope this clears things up for all of our interested readers. Back with
more as I hear it.
