MINEAPOLIS - Derek Jeter's ability to play through pain is well known.
However, watching him leave the Metrodome on the back of a cart last
night with an injured left ankle was an indication the shortstop will be out of
the lineup today.
"He is OK," manager Joe Girardi said of his captain, who went 3-for-5 and drove
in a run in the 9-6, 12-inning win over the Twins. "He has a bruised instep. I
think he will play [today]."
Girardi spoke before Jeter, who fouled a ball off the foot in the fourth inning
and stayed in the game until the ninth, required a cart to leave the ballpark. Jeter walked from the trainer's room to the cart in the hallway with a severe limp.
X-rays were negative on the foot. If Jeter can't go, Wilson BetemitWilson Betemit will start at short.
