[閒聊] Is Hughes replacing Bruney?
Joe Girardi repeated the phrase several times Tuesday night in explaining his
decision to go with Brian Bruney in the eighth inning, even after Phil Hughes
breezed through Seattle in nine pitches in the seventh. After watching Bruney
give up two runs that night, allowing Seattle to tie it, Girardi maintained,
"Bruney's our eighth-inning guy.''
Not anymore. In two subsequent wins, including Friday's 4-2 win over Toronto,
Girardi has called on relievers other than Bruney in the eighth. He said that
is likely to continue in the near future. "We need to get [Bruney] going and
we need to get him right and we'll get him right,'' Girardi said, "but Hughes
is throwing the ball real well right now.''
Phil Coke retired Adam Lind to begin the eighth Friday. Then Hughes - with a
fastball that reached 96 mph - gave up a single on an 0-and-2 pitch to Scott
Rolen but got Lyle Overbay and Vernon Wells to protect a 3-2 lead. On
Wednesday, it was Alfredo Aceves and Coke in the eighth.
Girardi said of Hughes: "I see him come out of that bullpen with a lot of
confidence. You look at the pitches today - down and away, down and away, 95,
96; location's very good; curveball's very good; just a lot of confidence.''
Bruney didn't pout. "As long as we're getting W's, I really don't care,
honestly,'' he said. "We're winning games, we're playing well. I'm sure
there's going to be situations where I have to get somebody out and it's
going to be a big spot and I'll be ready for it.''
Posada sits again
Jorge Posada, who took a foul tip to his left thumb Wednesday night and was
limited to pinch hitting Thursday night, did not play Friday. "He's got some
swelling in his thumb, so we're going to give him another day and see where
he is [Saturday],'' Girardi said before Friday's game.
Plans for A-Rod
Girardi said Alex Rodriguez likely will get one of the next three home games
off before the Yankees head to Minnesota, though he didn't make a complete
day off in Minneapolis sound as much a sure thing as he had earlier in the
week.
"If we give him a complete day off here, you'd think about just DHing him a
day in Minnesota,'' Girardi said.
In the Yankees' current 8-1 streak, A-Rod has gone 11-for-29 with 12 walks,
hit five homers and driven in 14 runs.
Girardi said the club will consult with doctors to see if what A-Rod has
called the "Philippon Rules'' - named for the doctor who performed his hip
surgery - still will be in effect after the All-Star break. He said "we'll
wait till we get there'' but added, "The assumption is we'll still have to do
some of this once we get past the All-Star break.''
