Yankees have five arbitration decisions to make By Mark Feinsand The MLBPA released the list of 210 players eligible for arbitration, though only five of them belong to the Yankees, who must decide by December 12 whether to offer them arbitration or non-tender them. Here’s a quick rundown: Chien-Ming Wang: This figures to be an easy decision for the Yankees, who don’t want to pay Wang anything close to the $5 million he made last season. Wang is recovering from shoulder surgery, and while some are speculating that he could be pitching again by late-April, it’s more likely that he’ll return to the mound in June or July. The consensus seems to be that the Yankees will non-tender Wang, then try to re-sign him to a smaller deal with some incentives. I don’t see that happening. Wang is still privately upset that the Yankees took him to an arbitration hearing two years ago over a difference of $600,000, then bragged about their victory via a public statement. If the Yankees let him go, there will be plenty of teams willing to give the two-time 19-game winner a chance to prove himself. I don’t think we’ll see Wang in a Yankees uniform again. Melky Cabrera: This is the most obvious one of the five, as Cabrera appears to be penciled in as the Yankees’ starting center fielder again in 2010. He made $1.4 million last season and would likely see his salary jump by at least $1 million next year, but for a piece of the everyday lineup, he’s still a bargain. Brian Bruney: The Yankees will probably offer Bruney arbitration, and after making $1.25 million in 2009, he would likely get a modest bump next season. If the Yankees plan on using Phil Hughes and/or Joba Chamberlain in the rotation, they’ll need some power arms in the bullpen. Bruney fits that mold. He’s done enough in the past two seasons to give the Yankees the belief that he can be a valuable member of the pen, and after putting him on the World Series roster, it would be a surprise if they non-tendered him. Chad Gaudin: Gaudin earned $2 million last season, so even though he would be due a small raise for 2010, I expect the Yankees to offer him arbitration and bring him back to compete for the fifth starter job. Brian Cashman said this week that he hopes to come to camp with immense starting depth, bringing as many as 11-12 pitchers to compete for spots. Gaudin did enough last year in his limited opportunities to warrant another year, whether it’s as a No. 5 starter or a long reliever. Sergio Mitre: The Yankees are unlikely to pick up Mitre’s $1.25 million option, but Joe Girardi loves this guy, so expect him to be back with the team when camp opens in February.
