New York Yankees beat Los Angeles Angels in 13-inning classic, take
commanding 2-0 ALCS lead
BY Mark Feinsand DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Updated Sunday, October 18th

It was fitting that Yogi Berra was in attendance at Saturday night's game, as
the Yankees experienced deja vu all over again.
Eight days after Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira combined for a memorable,
extra-inning playoff win, A-Rod and Melky Cabrera treated Yankee Stadium to
another dramatic comeback victory in Game 2 of the ALCS.
Two innings after A-Rod's leadoff homer off Brian Fuentes tied the game, the
Yankees walked off with a 4-3 win over the Angels in the 13th when Maicer
Izturis threw away Cabrera's ground ball as the Angels tried to force out
Robinson Cano at second base. The game lasted five hours and 10 minutes.
The Yankees now head to the West Coast with a commanding 2-0 lead, as the
best-of-seven series shifts to Anaheim for Game 3 tomorrow afternoon. Andy
Pettitte gets the start for the Yankees, while Jered Weaver takes the ball
for the Angels.
"I'm tired," Joe Girardi said, "but I am going to sleep well on the
plane."
A.J. Burnett may not have factored into the decision, but he was in his
familiar spot after the game, delivering a whipped cream pie in Jerry
Hairston's face after the Yankee reserve opened the inning with a single and
scored the game-winner.
Hairston, pinch-hitting for Freddy Guzman, led off the 13th with a single to
center off Ervin Santana. Brett Gardner bunted Hairston to second, then
Santana intentionally walked Cano to put runners at first and second.
Cabrera, who had three walkoff hits during the season, hit a grounder into
the hole at second, where Izturis fielded it and tried to get the force at
second base. But Izturis' throw was wide of shortstop Erick Aybar, allowing
Hairston to score the winning run.
After stranding the winning run at third base in the ninth, the Yankees
nearly got a huge break in the 10th, as Aybar never touched second base on a
potential double play, putting the winning run at second base with one out.
But neither Johnny Damon nor Teixeira could drive in the game-winner, giving
the Angels another crack at it in the 11th.
Chone Figgins came through with an RBI single - his first hit in 19 at-bats
this postseason - to give the Angels a 3-2 lead, but A-Rod drilled Fuentes'
0-2 pitch over the right-field wall to lead off the bottom of the inning,
tying the game as the rain continued to fall harder on the field.
"You're definitely not thinking home run, and you're certainly not
thinking home run after you're down 0-2," Rodriguez said. "You're just thinking
about getting on base. I got a pitch I could handle and I hit it well.
"I was thinking, 'Double or home run?' I wasn't sure. Once I got the home run
call, I was very happy."
"He's swinging the bat great," Girardi said of A-Rod. "In five games
he's hit two game-tying homers. (It's) pretty unbelievable what he's done so
far."
The Yankees had another golden opportunity in the 12th, loading the bases
with two outs for A-Rod, but Santana got him to fly to center to send the
game to the 13th.
"I told Derek (Jeter) in the 12th that I was starting to run out of bullets,"
Girardi said. "I told him we needed to get something going."
Burnett gave the Yankees his second straight quality start of the playoffs,
recording his second no-decision. He allowed two runs on three hits and two
walks, striking out four in 6-1/3 innings, the fifth time in five games the
Yankees have gotten a solid outing from their starting pitcher.
Angels starter Joe Saunders gave up two runs in the first three innings, but
the lefthander settled in after that, holding the Yankees off the scoreboard
through the seventh. Saunders retired the first five batters to start the
game, but a two-out walk to Nick Swisher cost the lefthander, as Cano drilled
a triple to right-center, scoring Swisher to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead in
the second.
Jeter added to the lead in the third, belting a solo homer into the
right-field seats. It was Jeter's second home run of the playoffs, his sixth
career ALCS homer and the 19th of his postseason career, moving him past
Reggie Jackson and Mickey Mantle for sole possession of third place on
baseball's all-time list. Burnett ran into trouble in the fifth, his command
early in the count abandoning him entirely. After throwing first-pitch
strikes to 13 of the first 15 Angels he faced, Burnett started out six of the
seven hitters in the fifth with ball one, working from behind the entire
inning.
Izturis got things started with a ground-rule double that bounced over the
wall in right field, scoring two batters later on Aybar's RBI single up the
middle. Burnett hit Figgins, then after retiring Bobby Abreu on a deep fly
that landed near the foul pole in left, the pitcher walked Torii Hunter,
loading the bases.
Burnett unleashed a wild pitch on his 1-2 offering to Vladimir Guerrero, which
allowed Aybar to come home to tie the game at 2. Burnett retired Guerrero on
a grounder to short, then pitched a 1-2-3 sixth, but after Cano booted a
routine grounder for an error with one out in the seventh, Girardi turned the
game over to his bullpen, which did its job.
"It was a great performance by A.J., the bullpen stepping up and
doing its job," Girardi said. "When we went to bed (Friday) night we didn't
think we'd play today. There were some miscues and we were fortunate to come
out on top."
