Derek Jeter had a strategy for handling questions from David Letterman when he and his Yankee teammates appeared on Letterman’s show Thursday night. Letterman tells the jokes, but Jeter went on the offensive with him. As Jeter, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte sat alongside Letterman at the taping of the show, Letterman said, “I don’t mean any disrespect, but how hung over are you guys?” “Probably not as bad as you,” Jeter said. Jeter is dating actress Minka Kelly, and there have been published reports that the two are engaged. Naturally, Letterman asked Jeter about it. “I heard that one, yes,” Jeter said. “I heard I was engaged. I heard I’ve been engaged a few times. I’ve heard I’ve been married and have kids, all kind of stuff.” Letterman recognized Jeter’s verbal rope-a-dope, so he persisted. “But are you engaged or not?” Letterman said. Jeter said: “I am not engaged. How about you?” Letterman was flustered and said he was not engaged before adding: “I’m married. I’m married, by God.” In a reference to the three years Pettitte spent with the Houston Astros, Letterman said, “Andy, I think you left for three years to go run a Dairy Queen or something.” If Posada ever encountered a dicey spot while he was catching in a game, Letterman advised him to “just let the umpire take one.” When Letterman discussed Hideki Matsui, the most valuable player in the series, and the possibility that he might not return, Jeter said that he hoped Matsui would be re-signed by the Yankees. “Where he is now?” Letterman asked.
