Jorge Posada's first game back behind the palate in a month immediately
resulted in further debate about the former All-Star's role for at least the
remainder of this season.
Posada crushed his second grand slam in as many days to propel the Yankees
into a tie with Tampa Bay for first place in the AL East. But he also had to
be removed after eight innings of the Bomber's series-sweeping 9-5 win over
Houston Sunday at the Stadium because he experienced "soreness" in the right
foot that recently landed on the disabled list.
Clearly, how much should Posada catch and how often he should serve as the
Yankees'DH will remain a fluid topic of discussion. Joe Girardi admittedly
will have to continue to balance the need to keep the 38-year-old backstop's
produtive power bat in the lineup with keeping him healthly amid the rigors
of his defensive responsibilities.
"I'm a little concerned. I wasn't even sure how many innings I was going to
play today going into the game." Girardi said. "I'm not really surprised he's
sore. But I think it's more important how he feels Tuesday and even(today),
even though we're not playing. But there's always going to be a level of
concern until it's completely gone."
Girardi stressed that the soreness "is not in the same spot" as the fractured
bone that sidelined Posada from May 17 until he was activated from the DL on
June 2. Posada acknowledged he's not sure if he'll play Tuesday aganist the
Phillies, but added that he's not concerned because he believes the soreness
stems from "just probably being tied because I hadn't caught in the while."
Posada had just four hits in his fiest 33 at-bats as a DH since his return
before rapping a grand slam for his 250th career home run in Saturday's 9-3
victory and reaching base three times(via the grand slam and two walks)Sunday.
"He just seems more comfortable at the plate, and the more reps he get's he'll
obviously be more the hitter he's been, on a consistent basis,"Girardi said.
Robinson Cano's 100th career homer, a solo shot in the fourth, and
Ramiro Pena's two runs single later in that inning had staked Phil Hughes(9-1)
to a 3-1 lead. Posada, whose slam Saturday was a righthanded blast to the
opposite-field, came up bating lefty with the bases loaded against righty
reliever Casey Daigle and two outs in the fifth.
He clocked Daigle's 2-0 pitch into the right-field seats for his ninth career
grand slam and a six-run cushion, becoming the first Yankee to hit a
grand slam in consecutive games since Bill Dickey in 1937.
"To be in the situation to hit two grand slam is amazing. It doesn't happen
offten, as you can tell," Posada said. "Bill Dickey, another catcher. it's
amazing how baseball, out of all those people, it was another catcher, hitting
two grand slams." That's pretty special.
As special as last year's title run was for the Yankees' old guard, consider
that this weekend sweep of the lowly Astros also was built around
Andy Pettitte's eight win of the season Friday, two homers by Derek Jeter on
Saturday, two scoreless innings by Mariano Rivera in three games and the two
grand slams by Posada. "Old doesn't mean they're out to pasture." Girardi said.
"We have some players that have some age on them, but they still have a lot of
good baseball left. We tease them a little about being old, but that's the fun
part of it."
It's also fun to be back in first place - the Rays lost to the Marlins - for
the first time since April 21. With Philadelphia arriving for the World Series
rematch Tuesday, the Yanks(40-23) finished a 16-game stretch that included 13
13 games against Cleveland, Baltimore and Houston with a 12-4 mark. "I like
the way we're playing and I don't care who we're playing....We've been winning
series and that's what I want continue to do," Girardi said. "You have to play
well on a consisten basis to be here right now and to be where we want to be
at end of the year."
